Unity holding $100,000 Windows 8-Windows Phone 8 game development contest

Earlier today, Unity announced that the latest version of their free game development tools, Unity 4.2, finally adds official support for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. In another related announcement, Unity has launched a new game development contest in a partnership with Microsoft.

The contest page has the details, which reveals that it has a total prize pool of over $100,000. The grand prize is $30,000 for the best Unity game made for Windows 8/RT, with another $30,000 for the best Windows Phone 8 Unity game. Each platform also have second and third place prize of $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.

The contest also has several honorable mention categories which are as follows:

  • Best New Game Content
  • Best Port of an Existing Game
  • Best Gameplay
  • Best use of native features
  • Best Use of Live Tiles

The developers who win in these categories will receive a free a Unity Pro license with a Windows Store Pro publishing add-on.

Developers who have already made Unity-based games for other platforms can port them to the new Windows platforms and submit them into the contest. There is a limit of 10 entries per person. The deadline for the entering the contest is September 30th.

John's not wording this properly, he's gotta add something like "Google and Apple are not holding a similar contest" Then the yoyo's here can be like "derrr WELP! SCROOGLED AGAIN YO!" "APPLE Tax at it again, you gotta buy Unity for Apple. GEEZ!"
