US government dept bans Vista

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has banned its users from installing Microsoft's new Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Internet Explorer 7 software packages, saying there was no business or technical justification for the upgrades.

"Based on our initial analysis (from internal recommendations and analysis performed by Gartner Group), there appears to be no compelling technical or business case for upgrading to these new Microsoft software products," the department's chief information officer Daniel Mintz wrote in a memorandum dated 19 January, 2007.

The CIO added there were specific reasons not to upgrade to the new software. These included the cost of the move (including hardware/software costs and labour), as well as compatibility concerns between Office 2007 and previous versions, primarily revolving around Microsoft Word. Also, Mintz noted available funding was limited, and IT staff had already committed their time to the pending move of DOT's headquarters to a new building.

this is good. and they know this is just another excuse to sell, more software and hardware. They dont eat s*it and dont have the resources like any corporation wants. If you want to update, just fix the taxes. A lil more higher :P haha

Oh, you mean governmental departments can't upgrade to brand new operating systems and hardware with a snap of a finger for really cheap? Holy cow, who would have thought that?! Most govs' IT infrastructures are an obsolete mess anyways. They put it like the DOT not upgrading to Vista says anything significant about the quality of the OS. It's just hardware costs and Office 2007 incompatibilities.

And why was this posted yet again?

I wish for the end of the **** house Neowin "news" about random US departments..
Who gives a flying **** about America the US transport department?!!!!!!? This gives a new low for Neowin, not just because it is a duplicate news post but it is a duplicate of the most egomaniac American bull****. Get over it America, there is a world surrounding you and actually against you. Noone gives a **** about reading twice about your transport department "banning" (which is wrong anyways) Vista.

The 2nd posting of this worthless junk makes me not want to read Neowin again. This isn't news, it isn't remotely news.
Please someone fly more planes into their buildings, the less Americans the better the world.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel? The more you say, the bigger of an ass it makes you look like. Very funny.

Yes, you are my hero. You most likely think people respect you. Honestly you as a nation voted your government into power and now your nation is the bottom of the world, Vote them out and perhaps people might repsect the nation and its people again. As right now the rest of the world does not.

Wow are you ever an idiot... fly more planes into buildings? Heck if Bin Laden had his way all of Europe would be gone too, how would you like that?

oh and I bet no one else also cares that France and UK and a few other nations in Europe have "postponed" a switch to Vista or are switching to Linux entirely also.....

Let's better drop that topic, Bin Laden already had his way in Europe in case you didn't notice.

If you didn't like that the article was about the U.S. DOT then you shouldn't have posted. I suspect that if you could count then you'd know that this makes the 3rd time this article has been posted.

Advocating the death of people just because you're ****ed over a news article makes you less than desirable to breathe. Less people like you in the world would make the world better off.

I was in UPS sometime late last year when they were shutting down and was surprised to see that they still run windows 2000.

Vista will soon be the main OS in the world, as XP is now. More hardware and software manufacturer's should be on the ball with this.

Hmmm, the govt, don't wanna upgrade to Windows Vista, and they've said so in public?! I wonder what MS is thinking?

They're thinking exactly what they thought when companies said the same of XP 5 years ago. They didn't say never they said for now.

Not upgrading the OS and Office I can perfectly understand, as there would be hardware and compatibility issues. 'banning' the upgrade of IE? If some thing's been built well and functions in IE6 than it should still work in 7, not to mention all the 'security fixes' there are in IE7.

1. This is a repost. You guys really need to learn to look at your own news reports.

2. Once again, a lame attempt to bash Vista. A completely fine o/s - it's not MS's fault that the DOT's ****ty custom applications don't work on it. That's not up to MS to fix, that's up to programmers who should have been working on this since day 1.

Give it a rest.

It doesn't matter if it's MS's fault or not. If apps don't work, don't work, period.

Or are you suggesting everyone should upgrade no matter if they're ready or not?

Let see Compare Editions of Windows Vista which has very heavy real world system requirements from what I have tested from each ver Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate all 3 eat 450MB on clean install and disable a lot stuff the best I could get down to was 300MB and it still has sluggish performance and didn't run very good in fact my landlord just got brand new Dell Dimension "I think it a E520" system with Core Duo 2 with Vista and ever it run like carp so we caned Vista and install his copy Windows 2000 Pro.

They banned the users?

Do the users have enough power to re-install the OS's? or even update the browser or office suite?

DoT would have contracted companies etc under it, though users probably isn't the best word.

I don't see ANY justification in vista for 1, there's no real reason for me to upgrade 2, Vista doesn't run very well even though the upgrade advisor says I'm good to go 3, Vienna will be out in late 2009. Why bother?

Your first two points are very valid. Your third one isn't, because Windows generally take 1-3 years before the release of the next one anyway (Windows 95 to 98, 98 to 98SE, 98SE to Me, Me to XP). Only XP to Vista has taken longer. When Vienna comes out (if it comes out in 2009, remember they said "Longhorn" was going to come out in 2003?) are you going to wait to the next one after that (cos that's slated for 2012)?

Very few if any companies roll out a brand new OS. There usually is about a year lead time so they can "certify" (ie rewrite) all their ****ty custom apps.

This, once again, is just someones poor attempt to make Vista look bad.

More FUD.

How can you possibly know what very few companies do and do not do? You can't. You can surmise but that does not make it fact. Please, either stick to what you know to be fact or don't say anything at all. To write as though you are an authority on all companies, even more than a few of them, is just a nonsense that is worth nothing outside of your own bedroom.

He's probably making an intelligent guess. It makes sense, why would companies upgrade just over 3 months after it's come out? He's not saying it as fact, he's making a post based on common sense. I personally know several companies that have not upgraded beyond Windows 2000.

In any case, the report is stating the obvious, so no real news here at all.

right on. this time, the fud comes from zdnet. bans? BANS? like how they ban kiddie porn? or, the way it really went: like every os before it, vista rolls out to consumers first via new pc's and business waits somewhere between 2-5 years before implementing.

oh, sniperx, i'm a network administrator and i've worked in the industry at enough companies to corroborate what ahhell is saying. jesus, if you would have ever read any article, ever, about new os's rolling out, you'd know that this is true. but, you are guilty of exactly the self-important, un-informed opinion you've accused ahhell of having. i'm not trying to start a fight here. all i'm saying is that you have no idea what you're talking about.

What is Vista but a new GUI and a rip of OSX features?

I was going to answer but you know what I'm just getting ****ing tired of doing it.

Guess I'll leave it at the majority of changes are under the hood, nobody bitched when OS X 'ripped' fast user switching.

The 'OS X' argument is just insecurity from Mac Users. Seriously, why would Microsoft want to copy an OS with a single-digit market share? Let's start making some sense.

Gadgets were ivented (but not implemented) before widgets. Desktop search existed for XP before Spotlight showed up in OS X.

And where is Windows is there a Dock or Apple Menu? Where in OS X is there a Start Button or TaskBar?

The idea that Microsoft would even want to copy such an unpopular (4-5% of computer users run it) operating system is just funny.

I'm glad you raised this. I was starting to think I was going mad. This is happening more and more lately. If memory serves me well, this particular story has been posted twice before!

Yeh after I read the first few comments I was like 'did I imagine that..?"

Yep, this is the third time this week I believe.

I don't know about the US but here in the UK, government departments would never upgrade that quickly anyway as everything is audited, budgeted, committee'd and so on. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turned out that some government departments were still running Win98 or worse!
