Virgin Media commences 20MB upgrade

Virgin Media has begun upgrading exchanges to 20MB today.

According to several members at Cable Forum the upgrades have begun today and will continue throughout a range of areas until the end of summer.

Virgin has provided a schedule which is fairly blank at the moment.

Yes! They've started! It won't be long before I'm upgraded (hopefully).

Is it only the 10mbit people who are getting a free upgrade, or are the rest of us in for a speedbump too?

Mines still 4MB, don't know if I'm getting an upgrade or not?!

They say it is a free upgrade, but my next bill already has the Â£2 increase I was told a couple of weeks ago it was adding.

I will be looking into changing provider soon as I am sick of paying over Â£30 per month for a service which very rarely gets near the speeds advertised.

have you tried using a download manager? most web sites won't allow over like 400k/sec for a single stream, when using IDM i can get a solid 1.2MB/s on most sites. you have to remember you downstream is faster than most sites can provide!

Only XL customers (10Mb) are getting the upgrade.

but if you were to downlaod directly from there ftp server, like telewest used to get you to do if the user was having problems with the cable line, you would get the max speed.

My areas slated for May. Don't have Virgin, but maybe other providers will follow suit at similar times. One can only hope!

I heard before that the 10MB customer get the 20MB upgrade, and they get an extra Â£2 added on their bill now. I also heard that the 4MB customers would be upgraded to 10MB, and the 1MB customers up to 4MB. This was a while ago, though; before the name changed to Virgin Media.

1MB is now 2MB...

when i called VM to upgrade my line, i asked about the other packages getting speed upgraded, i was told they dont have any plans at the moment to upgrade them.

If they follow their normal pattern, Broadband size L users will be increased next, followed by size M. I wouldn't expect the next announcement until this one has been completed though!

I'm in a damn non-cable area, so I gotta live with the stupid perils of ADSL. I guess it's not all that bad, I'm with Be Unlimited getting around 8Mb (My Modem is sync-ing at 10Mb, but speed tests are showing 8Mb) but it costs near enough Â£36/month including BT Line Rental.

I always find I hardly ever get full 10Mb speeds just browsing the web or using torrentz. But if I download stuff from news servers like Giganews I always get full speed.

You should feel lucky, im with bethere and only get 2meg speeds If only i was in a bloody cable area :@

Heh.. if only! It's 20mbit really, which still kicks bottom though! :p

Can't wait for mine to get updated; though I think I'll struggle to use it all!

The internet here isn't that bad any more...the high speeds for residentual areas are still to be had with ADSL albeit you must be close to the exchange. Can get up to 24mbit here now which is getting more and more popular (but most people won't get the full 24mbit speed)

I'm a bit peeved, moved over to cable for broadband after being told by Virgin Media that I would be upgraded free on the 1st May from 10Mb to 20Mb. Seen it hadn't happened today and just noticed this thread, Liverpool is down as 'to be confirmed' so does anyone have an idea as to when this may be?

Rang support who put me through to the Asian call centre (what a waste of time) they couldn't understand my question and in the end THEY hung up as he didn't understand what an upgrade was, all he kept saying is there is no email problems in the area, WTF?

ahh yes, the offshore call centre. I rang them to inform them that the local gang of kids had prized open the green box in the street and left all the cabling hanging out. After waiting about 1hr on hold and speaking to different people, i was eventually told that cable modems should be silver and i shouldnt have it outside in the street. :ponder: :worried:

lol.. we have 24Mbit for almost a year now..
not that special in The Netherlands, and not that expensive either.

i feel sorry for you BeLGaRaTh, there has been times when ive needed to call TW for tech support and they have been very helpfull.

TW tech support were UK based and always excellent.

I've never had to ring them since it's changed to Virgin Media, but have seen plenty complains about the tech support now.

If people are not happy with the prices, call and complain. I did and suggested switching companies and the lady on the phone changed by bill from Â£55 for 4mb broadband and unlimited calls on the landline, to Â£38 for 10mb broadband soon to be 20mb, same landline phone service plus some other deals on mobile and international calls. Their customer service was really good too, although they still seem split into NTL, Blueyonder etc service calls and I was on Blueyonder so maybe it's the NTL customers being put through to foreign countries?

i think all VM customeres who were once TW customes should boycot that call center and force VM to bring it back to the UK.

back 3 years ago i had a problem with my TW account and the Default email address they give you went missign from the selfcare site and i was unable to login and get email from out look and webmail
you know the one some thing like KL358r4741@blueyonder.co.uk (not real BTW). if this problem happened and i had to call VMs tech support id problely have a hard time getting them to fix it.

all these indian call center seem to want to have your call over and done with ASAP and they dont realy care what your problem is.

we need our UK call center back VM!

Try downloading something from Usenet or Apple's servers. I'm sure you get your 4Mb then.

My connection gets throttled almost every day, no matter what my usage is. Officially it's between 16:00 and 00:00, in reality it can be anytime of the day. The reason i know it's throttled is because my max download speed magically becomes bang on 2Mbps. After many phone calls to CS someone finally admitted that there wasn't enough capacity in my area so they were throttling connections and had been doing so for a while without informing customers. So how the hell they're going to manage to get people on 20Mbps i really don't know. (These problems started last year)

I get the full 4mbit at peak times.

Damn cable companies... an area 5 minutes drive from my house will be able to get those speeds in May. and it's unlikely I'll get much higher than 4MBits on my BT landline until BT does another major rollout of the new technologies to get to faster speeds.

when will i be able to get talk anywhere 400 on my home phone with virgin! im waiting until its available then going to change from bt

Wow, they are giving you 20Mb down, but still only 768KB up. I was hoping you guys would set the standard for our pathetic upload speed here in the US if we ever get a decent speed increase...

I'm in Farnborough (GU14) and have an SB4100 cable modem and have 20Mb so i say anyone in Farnborough reboot their modems and see what you get

Farnborough is part of the Guildford head end , so I guess this agrees with the May thing in the schedule.

We're moving from Virgin,

The service is good, but the price is just too high. I think I get 2 or 4MBps, and it costing me Â£18 a month. I can't really afford that for too much longer. :\

Here in Italy we have 24mb adsl since last year (24mb down / 1mb up for 39€/month). Such a shame upload speeds are still so slow..

At Uni, I pay Â£45/month for BT Phone (Incoming only) and 8MBit broadband.
Because i'm so far from the exchange i only get 2MBit.
Because the BT HomeHub is a POS i only get 55% signal strength and 1MBit on my PC.
Edit: speed test, im getting 2MBit to my PC :)

4MBit Virgin media at home though, so it's not all bad.

Anyone on Virgin should phone up and complain about something or just blatently ask for them to do you a deal. I'm on 20Mb/s, large TV pack and a phone line for Â£30 a month. And the guy said that price is guaranteed for 10 years
