Vista "Out of Memory" Error When Copying Files Hotfix

You just can't seem to throw enough memory at Vista.

There have been a number of issues that Vista users have reported relating to copying and moving data, especially large numbers of files. Often there can be multiple errors at play making it difficult for Vista users to track down the problem, in fact very often there is little indication that file copy operations haven't completed correctly. It's only when the user checks the number of files in source and destination that they realize they have a problem.

These don't have to be large files and the problem can also occur when copying smaller groups of files that in total exceed 16,400 files between reboots. Following the "Out of Memory" message a range of other errors can occur such as menus and tabs disappearing within the Windows environment and even reboots and BSODs are reported.

You know, I thought it was just my graphics equipment, but maybe it is Vista. HL2 ran great for me, but for some reason, after I installed Orange Box, the Episode 1 is real slow, like 10-30 fps. I've got good hardware too, but something is weird...

Man what else is going to go wrong with that software. I tried it for a while, but it just got too frustrating (kind of like XP pre sp1). Switching back to XP was the best thing I've done, especially since Orange Box came out. I've seen it run on Vista and it was awful....

Not all end-case bugs are found, even in the most rigorous testing stages.
This seems to be a very rare case, From what i can see and read.

..cmon guys, Vista is here to stay, Microsoft has invested quite a lot in it and is not gonna scrap it and they'll keep issue patches to improve stability and performance, is a new product, written from scratch what do you expect? D you want Microsoft to apologise for not being ready when it was released??..what would that change? would it make it a better product to your eyes? If they hadn't released it when they did you would be here complaining about it being vaporware....

Uhh if vista was written from scratch there would be a hell of a lot more users using it.

What makes you think that? If it was 100% re-writen and all new code, even more things from XP to Vista wouldn't work. Compatibility would've probably went right out the window fully. And since compatibility is what most people have problems with, I don't see how that would change with all new code.

Put it this way, XP and Vista still have code in them from the 3.11 days

I've had a problem with XP that required a hotfix from MS. You just call them up answer a few questions about the problem your are having and then they e-mail you a direct link to the file. It was completely free and only took me about 5 minutes. And it fixed my problem too!

some people have issues with vista some dont... but i play it safe and stick with something with mass software support and it just "works" and that is XP... i have a copy of vista but i never used it yet as like i said many times before this is the first os (vista) i never really was in a hurry to upgrade to. (all previous windows since i been using pc's since 1995) cause pretty much all the os's before i upgraded to... Win98 alot (as in majority) claim it was worse than WinME but i think i liked windows me better cause of it's auto detection of hardware as it was much better than win98... but when you went from windows 98 to win2k/xp there was a HUGE boost to system stability. those days are gone where you get stability boosts... and also, i think all those people who claim there system is more stable with vista over xp is a bunch of BS... cause out of all the pc's i installed windows xp to ... it's ALWAYS been stable (im sure theres always those rare exceptions since pc's can be sorta random at times)

bottom line = im sticking with WinXP for quite a while, i aint gonna bother with Vista til ATLEAST SP1 MINIMUM... i might even consider waiting til SP2 cause i figure by sp2 the os HAS to be good by then for sure... cause if it aint then the OS basically sucks.

SP1 for vista = most major issues should be solved by then.
SP2 for vista = should be a throughly tweaked and supported OS by this point in time

1 and 2 : do you actually suffer from this bug? it is so rare you can't even freaking download it from MS without contacting customer support online..... it might or might not be in the next service pack.

for me, running vista from day one - exactly 0 problems.

From the KB article:

To resolve this problem, submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the hotfix.

Well, I guess it means no direct download is available...
Guess I'll have to wait for Vista SP1 (which will probably include this fix, right?)...

or just stick the Royale/MSE theme on XP and transfer files quicker.

I mean ffs - the bloated hog can't even copy files properly.

I so wanted Vista to be great. I'm always the first to want brand new kit/software, but even I just can't be arsed with Vista now. EVERYTHING is awkward.

Yeah XP is old, out of date.. etc etc, whatever the vista fanboys want to come out with, but the fact is... XP works.

Oh and by the way, I'm a microsoft fanboy. But I'm not an idiot.

XP is old... but no outdated. Also, I guess this OS will last a lot longer when XP SP3 will be out...
Vista will be great when SP1 will be out, IMHO.
