Watch 9 minutes of SimCity gameplay footage

SimCity is Maxis and EA's upcoming strategy game, following in some pretty big footsteps laid out by its predecessors. To get people pumped for the release in February 2013, EA has released a "gameplay strategy" video that delivers a cool nine minutes of footage from an unfinished build of the game.

Immediately you can see the improvements made to the engine of SimCity compared to previous games, as it looks pretty darn good at this stage with many more levels of detail. Some commenters on the YouTube video were saying it looks too simple and dumbed-down for hardcore strategy fans, with options removed that were present in SimCity 4; one top commenter called it a "Facebook game". We'll leave you to decide.

Pretty excited about this, finally a game that looks fun that isn't "twitch". Played the crap out of all the "SIM" games growing up. SIM Theme Park, Sim City (all of them) Sim Farm (pretty amazing actually). Love the changes to water/power, there was nothing worse than having to run water lines/power lines.

I loved the original SimCity and SimCity2000 was good, but I got away from the Series on SimCity4 since it just got more complicated I felt.
This looks awesome. It takes a lot of tediousness out of it. It has me interested for sure. Of course it helps that the graphics are miles ahead of where it has been.

This looks superb!

I remember playing the original Sim City on my Amiga A500 as a child. This series has certainly come a long way since those days of boxy buildings and dots for cars.

That looks awesome. Love the ease of zoning along roads, and I really like how all your utilities are under the road... as they would be in most real cities.

I'm one of the people that hopes SimCity will be more complicated than SC4. There was a lot of control in 4, but I found myself wanting to fine-tune things more, especially with taxes and revenue streams. Getting the road system to work properly was a pain especially after the city was established, so hopefully that's improved in this new game as well.

Very much agreed. Sim City 4 wasn't hard and if anything needs to be made harder, a lot harder.

I think it looks great. Been out of PC gaming for awhile now but the last Sim City I played was way too complicated for me with the water/pipe situation. This time around it appears to be a little bit easier.

There were a lot of fun, and complicated parts, to Sim City 4, but I don't remember the water pipes being one of them. Why was this an issue for you?
