i think the point is that for many people now skinning software is redundant. and while there are quality skins available - usually at a price - the standard is not enough to warrant the investment either in the software or the individual skins.

WB is good technology, but has one major problem. There is not a single skin which could be so beautiful and consistant like default Aero. All WB skins are unpolished, lame, broken piece of ***t. Even i you want to buy and use WB, there is simply no reason for that, not even in premium skins..

Like I already said, it become useless very quickly and you just end up using default skin or uxtheme compliant ones.

I am really shocked every time Windowblinds is upgraded, the detractors come out of the woodwork and put it down. I have used this product for quite some time, since somewhere around version 2.0, and yes it was buggy at times back then. However it has been stable for me since version 4 on any version of windows, XP, Vista and now 7.
It works, and it works quickly.
Are there ugly themes for it, you betcha, but its all in the eyes of the beholder, some find those "ugly" ones beautiful.
There are so many choices however, that I can't possibly see how you can't find even a few that suit your tastes. Unless you are someone who likes being stuck at plain grey.

I do agree that "skinning" is not as much a must have as it used to be, but it still has its place for those of us who like to change things up from time to time. Windowblinds can enhance your productivity if you choose to use those features, but mainly it is for the looks and that's fine.

Stardock also has several good productivity programs available and are working on other ones as well. Its one thing to dislike the software for one reason or another, but there are many who find it useful and bug-free. Give it another try, you might surprise yourself how good it has become.

Stardock has some talented developers. Maybe it is time they devoted their energies towards something with a little more utility. Times have changed, and the market for this kind of thing is shrinking, I would imagine.

Sexy Vista was pretty awesome, but it doesn't look real great on 7. Aside from that I'd agree, though, most of those "master" skins aren't very masterful at all.

Would be useful if the skins weren't worse* than the ones available for free on DeviantArt, which you can apply using Uxstyle, for free. Umm, yeah. :s

* in my "minimalistic" opinion

I had version 5 back in the day when I was using XP and wanted to get the whole glass thing that Vista was about. It was good then. Now that I moved on to Win 7, I don't need to fiddle to get "eye candy". These days it's about productivity. At least I hope this release paves the way for other Stardock apps to swiftly become natively Win 7 and 32/64 bit.

Problem is the video on their site of "Windows Blinds in action". A lot of those screenshots in that video are UGLY. You'd think they would use the best they had to offer to showcase the product in a video. Which leaves me to believe that most of the skins make a person wanna barf.

+1 those skins classed as master skins took quite some time to get looking and working right why shouldn't the authors get some recompense for them

Mucho dinero. That is a hefty price for a simple skin program. For the first time since uxtheme came into existence I feel no need to patch it, or use skin programs. Windows 7's theme suits me fine.

Okay now that you have had a chance to put forward your opinion now give us the reason you have come to this conclusion; otherwise it means nothing.

Just because I think thaht paying for customizing the interface is just a rip-off. And like everyone say , WB styles are mostly ugly and not very usable on a daily basis. Ok it's not Stardock fault, but the most usable one are not free. So you end up using skins and theme that you do not like very much. As of Icon Packager, not all icons are "customisable". Fences is useless, it just arrange icons on the desktop (can do that without it). Good for those who like Stradock, but my experience with these softwares tend to make me stay out of it.

Ahh WindowBlinds. I loved you on XP, but have absolutely no use for you on Windows 7. Our affair was short, yet sweet. I will remember you always but I have kicked you to the curb.

Eh, I agree with Xenomorph. Some of the skins were good, but the vast majority of them were unusable horror shows. Of the good ones, half of them were "master skins", and I would never pay for a skin. Personal choice there, not saying someone else shouldn't.

I did buy DeskScapes 3 recently though, when it was on sale for $14.95. I am digging it a lot.

Sounds like WindowBlinds 7 is for people like yourself (and me) who liked it on XP but found its value diminished in the age of Aero. WindowBlinds 7 includes Aero skinning which is pretty cool imo.

Ok, your video has almost convinced me I need it! But, I am out of work so my software spending options are almost zero, so I will wait until it shows up on sale on Impulse and will probably snag it then. Being jobless sucketh.

Oh yea, if you do happen to read this reply BRING BACK THE PODCAST!!! Haha, I loved that damn thing. You guys were great on it.

Absolutely rediculously bloated, useless program.
Tried it once, That was enough for me!

Man, consider it part of your marketing budget and hook up with the guy that does MaximumPCs Podcast (the tie for my favorite Podcast EVER by the way, along with Poweruser.tv), I guess his name is Andy. Then you guys just record your segment and let him do all the hard work! haha

Adjectives can be hurtful man! Sure, it wouldn't be for everyone, but that doesn't make it useless, and it wasn't really "bloated". If you are talking about the size of the installer, there were a number of skins packaged in with it and those take some space for all the resources.

Personally, I always thought the default XP skin was beyond hideous. And yes, you could uxtheme patch and install unsigned skins, but the ease of management that WindowBlinds brought to the process was great, in my oh so humble opinion. If I still used XP I would still be using it. It was just with the advent of Aero that its usefulness was reduced for me.

He means bloated in the amount of resources it took in the background. IMHO, It took way too many in XP to do it's job and in Vista it was alot less but still it made Windows fallback to Classic and then it didn't do a great job on the skinning being that it left cosmetic pieces of the theme lying around when windows were closed sometimes.

The DO always promise new and cool things!

In my opinion it ALWAYS performs absolutely right, and most of the skins are absolutely wonderful!

+1

3rd Party Windows Skinning Engines are SO 1999.

And it is. I'm using Aero Metal (included) with WB 7 right now.

Skinning Aero can change how Windows is presented (7 OR Vista).
