Windows 8 built-in application updates now available

Microsoft announced last week that it would be updating the applications that are bundled with the Modern UI in Windows 8, and the company has now delivered on that promise.

Right now, the Mail, Calendar, People, Messaging, Maps and Skydrive applications are showing that updates are available for some users, but other users are also reporting that they are seeing an update for the built in photo viewer, sports and news applications too. The changes to the applications were listed the other day when Microsoft announced them, but here they are again for quick reference:

SkyDrive

  • Search within SkyDrive
  • Rename and move folders and files
  • New first-run experience
  • Custom sort order

Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging

  • Conversation view of your inbox
  • Complete IMAP account support
  • Accepting and declining invitations in email
  • Capturing and updating your account picture
  • Improved search
  • Search for a contact within the Messaging app

Maps

  • Bird's eye view
  • 3,000+ indoor venue maps
  • Driving directions hints
  • Improved navigation and layout
  • Improved customization, including custom pushpins and roaming options
  • Integration with Bing and Travel apps

The applications are now available for update via the Windows Store in the start screen. Just open the store, select "Updates" in the top right and install the available updates.

The first and most important update should have been Windows Store. It's so featureless, useless and ugly... It works just like a database, not as power full tool to find a useful apps, like on Android.

Try to find YouTube app on WP market. No similar apps, no popular related apps. You won't get know that MetroTube is most popular YouTube client without some other places.

Windows Phone Marketplace and even the latest Xbox Marketplace browser on the dashboard are doing a better job at the moment.

Still nothing for Music & Movies fingers crossed Microsoft wont continue its mistreatment of its media players, I don't suppose you can use WSUS for these updates ?

Well I'll be damned, they've managed to make the mail application even more crashtastic. I can't even use it for more than 20 seconds without it disappearing in shame

Do your pictures show up in your Pictures library in Windows Explorer? It uses the Windows Search indexer to pick up all the files that are part of your Pictures library, so if they're in there it should work.

I'm in Spain. I got Skydrive the other day, today News & Weather and when I checked for updates another 4 came up (People,Mail,Maps and Photos). After updating these I still see a notification of 2 updates available however whenever I go in it says no App updates available.

Those would likely be due to the Music & Video applications - which aren't currently listed on the store so you can't actually download their updates.

They need to add horizontal mouse scrolling to all the apps, its a feature that all the MS apps should have to set a standard for others to follow. I read an article about a twitter client for 8 including this with the help of some ms staff, so it should be easy enough

I got updates for News and Weather. There must be another update coming for News though because there's supposed to be a way to customize the fonts and stuff in the article view, which doesn't seem to be in as far as I can tell.

Also, it seems "type to search" is being rolled out to across all the searchable first-party apps now.

My maps, mail and photos are getting updated automatically. I am in Lithuania although Windows 8 is configured as being in the US. Not sure if that makes a difference. Anyway, looking forward to seeing what is updated

this is the greatest advantage of windows 8, the ease at which microsoft can update the house software (and hopefully deliever more regular updates!)

Yeah, I mean it's not like they could have used Windows Update or anything like they do for Office.

Can anyone please confirm if you do not get suggestions for contacts in the mail app now? After the update, the autocomplete doesn't work. It's like it lost its connection to the People app. It only offers to search the directories since both of my accounts are Office 365 Exchange accounts.

Confirming...no autocomplete dropdown. Clicking on the (+) symbol next to the entry field brings up the People app with a warning that says none of my contacts have e-mail addresses.

I got nothing. When I go to the "STORE" I get my computer needs to be connected to the internet first. Which I am.

Got an update for Skydrive previously. Mail and News came today. Don't know when Mail/Messaging/People/Calendar came as I removed that.

If you're not seeing them, hit Win + C, Settings, and App Updates.

...and the first thing Mail does when I open it after updating is crash.

thanks! Here's me, trusting that little green tile for my updates. Damn you, green tile!

Yanno, I have to admit, though keyboard shortcuts are convenient in practice, I feel like they should never be part of instructions to perform an action.

Fortunately, there are a ton of ways to slide the charms bar into view. Trackpads on laptops let you swipe in from the right to do it, and hopefully mice with extra buttons can be programmed (I have two programmable, and I'm aiming to set one to Start and one to Charms).

Or Win+I to directly jump to Settings charm

I refer to them in instructions when I just want people to reach an end goal reliably, without having to worry about them understanding every step of the way.

When I talk less-computer-savvy people through shortcuts, I usually say the shortcut and then the action, like "Press Ctrl C, as in Copy" and "Hit the flag key, then P, as in Project".

And yes, press Ctrl X to excise.

Ya it does that sometimes to me as well. Pretty strange behavior.

Simply open the store, then CHARMS BAR -> SETTINGS ->APP UPDATES and check manually. The "1 ipdate" normally pops up when there are apps available but prescheduled to show up automatically on a certain date. The manual search and update will get the apps in most cases immediately.

Yeah, mine shows that there are 2 updates available but when I check I'm up-to-date. It's yet another poorly implemented / broken feature relating to Metro apps.

Same happens now after I updated these apps.

I have found that this occurs when apps are removed from the store. Currently I have 'Updates (2)' showing. The only apps that I cannot find in the store are the default 'Music' and 'Videos' apps; can anyone else find these in the store?

This is all really stupid design though; if there's a problem with an app update, why not tell me which app is the problem?

Edit: From answers.microsoft.com ... "That problem is likely due to an app (or in your case apps) being taken down from the store for either updates, repair or for whatever other reason it may be. " - Hopefully means that the Music and Videos apps are due for some changes.

By "changes" I assume you mean scrapping them altogether and coming up with a decent app for both forms of media. I don't know why they're not integrated, as even iTunes has that functionality.

Personally, I think media just isn't suited to the WinRT platform. I don't want the Music app opening in fullscreen every time I play an MP3 and if I switch away from the app the music dims to a nearly inaudible level. It's like the people designing it have no clue how people actually use computers and consume media. And then there's the stupid load screen, which is bright orange - it's really not pleasant to look at, especially after just waking up.

Why can't i see new features/change long when I'm on the upgrade screen? Kinda scary to update apps.

You have to check it on the Details page of the app. I'd love to see a changelog right on the upgrade screen as well, though, so as to avoid going to each app's page one by one.

What if the update removes functionality, or just a version that flat out sucks.

And this actually happened with the PICTURES app.
Before the update, I could sort pictures by date. Now, even that option is gone. It is already sad that there is no way of sorting pictures alphabetically but taking even this last sorting option away ... well, they should have labeled it APP DOWNGRADE and not UPDATE.

I also was hoping that I finally would be able to list my contacts (PEOPLE) by LAST NAME, FIRST NAME - nope! A basic feature such as this should have been added already in the APP PREVIEW, yet, I guess I am "just using the app wrong".

Just pretend it's Evernote.

Functionality is never removed. It just hasn't been added to the new version yet.

Tumultus said,

Not to sound like a douche but "update" merely means "up to date"; the functionality or features aren't in question. "Upgrade" is the word you're thinking of.

*takes semantics nazi hat off*

You can sort the contacts in People by last, first (now?) It's in Settings -> Options. Doesn't work for Twitter contacts though. You can also filter contacts by source network (was this here before or was it just added?)

If the updates are not showing up yet, then:
Go to Store > Charms Bar > Settings > App updates > Check for updates.

I'm in the UK and got all the updates including Photos and News.

Thanks. It's a sad day when auto-updates aren't automatic. You shouldn't have to manually trigger updates like this.

You didn't need to do that, you could have waited for the next check - but you heard about an update and didn't want to wait so you DECIDED to push the update check.

I'm used to Steam whereby when an update is released it is automatically downloaded. It's not rocket science.

it was made for mobile devices with limited data plan in mind as well for desktops... don't bitch all the time - you don't NEED to read tech news whole day to know about 0-minute updates; if you choose to do that please be able to push a button

No, steam will check periodically and if it finds anything it will download it. Windows store does exactly the same. If you look at the client before it has seen it, you will need to trigger a manual update or wait for the client to perform its next check.
It's exactly the same!!!

morden said,

That's the issue though. It wasn't designed for systems with unlimited data and permanent power; it was designed for mobile computers with limited batteries and limited bandwidth.

I am actually on a different boat. I want to see changelogs first before updating but an option to do so will be nice.
