Windows Live Messenger 2010 beta preview

Windows Live Wave 4 has leaked onto the Internet, and bundled with it comes Windows Live Messenger 2010 (version 15) beta.  The UI has been modified from the previous 2009 build (version 14), with some additional social networking additions, including Windows Live Profile, and (not-yet-functioning) Facebook integration.

Some other noticeable additions to WLM2010 are an overhauled contact list window.  The contact list now functions as a social network feed, showing the latest updates from your friends.  You can instantly share photos and links directly from your status window.

The instant messaging window also received the long-awaited tabs, allowing for multiple conversations in a single window.  The Messenger Team also updated the emoticons by changing out the the old smiles for updated icons.

Everything looks so... haphazard. The tabs in the conversation window for example, are ripped straight out of IE and don't look right at all. And the Metro UI doesn't fit the design; the social pane just looks like word spaghetti with random text sizes everywhere! They need to just scrap the whole application and start again, and make it look like a more native Windows application instead of all this customization crap. It's hard to have a consistent and free flowing UI when each contact has a different colour scheme and banner image.

A quick note: I would expect that giant ad to be removed by the time Wave 4 is released to the public, this is probably just an internal thing... and it's kind of weird that some people are reporting the ad not even there... which is odd.

i get the error message -cant sign into messenger cause u dont have permision to log into this version of messenger, does any one know how to resolve this

I've always wanted a desktop app for ads that had the ability to send messages. Thanks Microsoft for giving us Microsoft Windows Live Advertiser with Instant Messenger.

THESE SCREENSHOTS ARE MISLEADING!!!
As some of the other commenters noted (the ones who actually installed it), the ads are not as big as those Neowin screenshots in this article. I'm not sure why your ads are so big, but when I installed it, it's the same size as it is in the current WLM2009.

That is one of the messiest, most unorganised interfaces I've ever seen. This is likely the result of trying to do too much at once, combined with the meddling of a dozen or so upper managers with no training whatsoever in design.

With this new UI scheme, which badly clashes with Windows itself, there's little to no visual differentiation between content or controls.

I just realized that ad could be roll over. I just got one in M2. It turns big if you put your cursor on it. But when you move your cursor or click close it goes small again so it is really no issue. Maybe the person who took the screenshot had their mouse of it making it enlarge. I'm sure MS would not make big ads like that default.

One thing I noticed was that there are certain words that are underlined and when you click on them it brings up a Bing Images window with images of the word you clicked (Turkey, Bananas, Apple, Microsoft, Xbox etc.)

They should make it look like the Windows Zune Media Player ... OMG I love that and the simplicity of it ... echo's the new stylings of the Windows 7 Mobile Phone OS ... very classy, beautiful text, lovely simple graphics. This MSN preview looks as dated as MSN has in years ... it's a real shame.

i installed this beta and my ads are the same size as the last, in social and friends mode, i don't know why they are so large in these pics!

nothing wrong with the ADs. take a look at neowin or this page itself. at the top, and on the right panel. time warner ads here and there (depending on your area) just because neowin has giant ads doesn't make it a bad thing. they're taking up a LOT of space, i could go blaming neowin all day, but i won't because this is a very fun website. WLM is very fun.

I don't complain about NeoWin anymore as they let me get rid of those ADs

So I don't see those ADs you speak of

Even using a bigger size for the window that ad is going to be huge.

The ads are not huge at all. That may just been a one off. I have not seen no huge adds. They are the same WLM 2009 size. And in Conversations I have only seen Just text adds

Guys you can make it go back to contact mode (Old WLM 2009 mode)

Also, it is not the Beta. It is just labled Beta. It is really Milestone 2. Known by the fact of tons of lacking features, (Webcam, customisation, etc) not working with social integration yet etc.

+1 Obviously it is not intended for everyday use. It perhaps may be very different in the end product.

I think it looks terrible . The ads are just disgusting as well as some of the font sizes. Remember Windows Messenger? You know, the one that came with Windows XP? Yeah, that one is a LOT better IMHO.

Nice ads. Also, I'm glad Microsoft recognises that 100% of WLM users are partially sighted with the size of the fonts in the social activity feed. The Metro UI is a good idea, just not in Messenger.

God, WLMessenger is so freakin ugly.. but I've tried alternatives and really haven't found anything I like. Plus I like some features supported by WLM, including sending drawn images, which can be actually useful for certain messages (queue phallic imagery jokes).

Old news, cnBeta already posted screenshots of a much newer build over a month ago http://www.cnbeta.com/articles/104624.htm.

The only newsworthy thing here is the leak of the (old) installer itself. The screenshots were already floating around for months.

Actually this build is newer and also we were the first to post Messenger screens originally months ago.

Explain to me how 15.2.2583.119 is newer than 15.3.xxxx.xxx (15.3.4xxx.xxx to be more exact if you consider the post they made the day after that).

Sorry I can't read Chinese. Nor would I care to visit that site if it was in English. I'm glad Neowin posted it. Even though I dont even use WLM.

All I see is a huge AD!

possibly because, you aren't meant to run the app in that 'mode' with that small a Window
Neowin are horrible at showing off Messenger, probably intentional to make the ad seem worse than it is

I always keep my window small. I would never use it full screen or anywhere even close to half the screen. If the ads don't change size depending on how you layout the screen, I'll be switching.

Stop talking out of your ass.

He's not. The ad becomes the older much smaller one when it is used in a Contacts Mode. You are never supposed to use the Social Mode in a small space, since it was designed to be used as a convenient app to pull all your social connections into one place and show it to you while keeping you connected to Windows Live Messenger. If you do not want a convenient app to pull all that maybe because you don't like it or because you aren't on all those networks, then you can use the Contacts Mode which is designed to be compact and give you easy access to your contacts like it always did.

All I'm saying is that you're wrong and that he is right. It was intended to be much bigger and take up lots of space because it was designed!(hint hint) to be convenient for you. Everything in one place isn't a bad idea when it's the Metro UI and it pulls good information. We all wanted a WPF Windows Live Messenger, and even if it isn't quite WPF yet or if it ever will be, this is the closest we're going to get, it has the animations, the good Metro UI font, everything.

i'll say it one last time, one isn't meant to run the app in that small a Window, using that specific 'mode' see my comment to xiphi

Holy Ads, are they being serious?! It takes up the entire contact list. Fail.

Chances are within a day of its release there will be a patch to remove it but seriously Microsoft wtf?!

Yeah this is an epic fail I wont be upgrading anytime soon, even tho I know that its a concept the memory is still veryyyy high and the release for this is in april, I think they're taking this ad thing and crappy social networking wayyy to much under consideration. I think I will end of downgrading back to 8.5 instead of upgrading. Just give me a messenger with lower memory and cpu usuage and I would be fine microsoft.

But it's an instant messenger program. Why should I have to take up the entire window to see who is online? I rarely run my IM programs bigger than what is displayed above.

C'mon it's a preview! The ad is not final

It seems you, and everyone else, didn't bother to look at the other pictures posted or even read up fully I guess.

The mode with the big ad is the social feeds mode, it's like a whole app for live/facebook and w/e else it works with. it's meant to be a bigger window! Like other feed aggrogator windows/apps out there. The ad is relative to the size of the mode, bigger window mode, the ad gets a bit bigger.

If you go from the "socal" mode back to the Contact list mode it's just like it is now, one small ad at the bottom of your contact list. Look at the other pictures posted ffs.

It's an optional mode for those who use facebook and w/e other networks who may or may not want to let WLM handle all of those instead of using or opening 3,4 or more windows/apps.

Not very good preview. CPU usage and memory are really high, even on idle...
They removed some of the webcam options, multiple place signon is not working, and those ads are huge

Are you for real? This 'release' wasn't meant to be made public, you should have known it would be unstable.

Of course i am. I've seen previews much more stable. Firefox 3.7a4pre for instance.
I'm just pointing the problems i detected.

BTW, it doesn't use that much RAM. Running it here no problem
