Xbox Live members get unlocked Netflix and Hulu Plus this weekend

Normally, Xbox 360 owners who are also Xbox Live Gold members would also need to pay the separate monthly subscription fee to access the Netflix and Hulu Plus apps (and we have already mentioned how we think this should be changed). This weekend, all Xbox Live members will be able to access both video streaming services, with just the Netflix and Hulu prices needed.

The Major Nelson website has the details on both free weekend offers. The Netflix offer is for all regions where Netflix is used on the Xbox 360 and is designed to help promote House of Cards, the new original drama series starring Kevin Spacey. Netflix will launch all 13 episodes of the Washington DC-based political drama on Friday so everyone with an Xbox Live Gold membership will be able to watch the entire season at once.

The Hulu Plus free offer is just for the US and is designed to get Xbox 360 owners to watch the service during Super Bowl weekend. Hulu will be showing all of the big TV commercials that will be broadcast during the game, along with classic Super Bowl commercial spots. Other Xbox 360 video partners like Maxim, Crunchyroll, EPIX and others will be offering Super Bowl themed programming this weekend as well.

I fail to understand why MS still insists we subscribe to Xbox Live Gold before we can access apps like Netflix which are available for free on other platforms, most notably the PS3. They keep pushing the Xbox as the best complete home entertainment experience and yet IMHO its terrible for actually watching anything. 1. WMC integration is a horrible buggy mess. 2. Playback of content from DLNA devices is severely limited both in terms of codec support and image quality (compare watching standard def divx or xvid content on an Xbox and PS3 for example, big difference). 3. Services such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu etc are limited to Gold subs only, while they are free and fully featured on other platforms. Lets be honest, gaming is the only area the Xbox shines, its about time we stopped pretending otherwise.

Lol they make people pay for a service just to use smother service that you pay for . Good lord Microsoft what's your problem $50 a year and you get nothing.

Sony gives you so much more so much .
And the online is not bad at all anymore.

Microsoft needs some serious help

Looks like he misunderstood the word "unlocked" and mistook it for "free".

It just means the app is available to Xbox Silver (or whatever it's called now) members, without the need for a gold membership. Very misleading article.

How about a free weekend of Live Gold instead? I know what Netflix and Hulu Plus are. What I wanna know is whether the Live Gold experience, as a whole, is worth the expense.

Doesn't make sense to me, quoted from MajorNelson...

"Xbox will unlock the Netflix app, so all LIVE users with a Netflix subscription can watch all weekend long. (All Netflix regions)"

It's unlocked, but you have to have a subscription? Eh?
From my understanding, it just means you wont need Gold to use Netflix for this weekend only. News title is miss-leading and wrong.

Gotta agree.
It looks more like all XBOX users with a current active Netflix subscription will be able to watch Netflix this weekend whether they have a Gold or not.

Great so I can watch Netflix through my XBOX through my TV instead of Netflix through my TV.

It's not just you in this world. Many (if not most) people do not have Netflix on their tv.

But if you do not have a Netflix subscription you will not be able to watch it... At least this is what I understood.

That's because the headline and article have been completely rewritten.

Original headline:
