for basic chatting i prefer Pidgin (http://pidgin.im/) as it's a all-in-one chat application without the bloat of the official apps.

so if all you want is a basic chatting then Pidgin is solid.

p.s. seems nowadays though people switching over to Facebook etc but i still prefer using IM's because it's more privacy etc.

Can anyone answer a simple question for me? Does this new version have re-made look where it's an all-in-one place app and kind of looks like a social networking site like Facebook, or is it a newer version of the older separate instant message windows version? I'm guessing it's the newer all-in-one look. I'm not sure if I want to upgrade to that or not. I haven't used it enough to know if I really like it or not.
