Apple reveals iPad Air, thinner and faster

Apple today refreshed their iPad lineup with a brand new generation of 9.7" tablet. Sharing the exterior design of the existing iPad mini, just with a larger screen, the device is noticeably thinner and only weighs 1 Pound. At 7.5 millimetres thin, it is 20% thinner and 28% lighter than the 4th generation iPad.

The device includes a 64-bit A7 processor which will power the same retina display that has been present since 'the new iPad', released early last year. It has double the graphics performance - 72x faster than the original iPad, and 8x faster a CPU than the first.

Other improvements include dual microphones and two antennas for twice the data transfer rates. It retains the same 10-hour battery life, and comes with the option to purchase new versions of iPad smart covers and iPad cases.

The iPad will continue to compete with Microsoft's Surface 2, which was put on sale today. On sale starting at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model, the iPad Air will ship November 1st.

As with iPhone, and iPod; the new iPad just shows that when Apple has no tech they can rip off from anyone, that their products remain basically the same year after year. They can't even innovate their own products.

Compare this to other OEM's and dare I say Samsung.

Here is what I see. I am not saying the overall design language has to change. We already expect that as a family of products, the basic design will look the same, with a few cosmetic changes; as car company's do.

But what would make the products better is changes we can actually see. THis is where Samsung is doing better because they are't selling you just hardware. They are selling a featureset with their devices that simply make them better, especially since with hardware everyone can have the same thing.

The downside with Apple here is, they keep offering the same product year after year, they add the expected hardware bumps like CPU and GPU and similar. But what about the software? They offer nothing. I am aware an agree many features of the Galaxy are gimmicky at best. But so what. the point is to make YOUR product look better. This years iPad...is it better than last years? Well basically, NO! Again, CPU's, GPU's and other parst are expected to get faster. Faster isn't always better. In this case, faster isn't better because faster chips aren't pushing anything new. Angry Birds will run equally as good on the same CPU inside a SNES. Why not an iPad running OS X and call it the iPad Air?

If Samsung for example could use iOS on their devices as an alternative to Android, they would run Apple totally out of business. Imagine an iPad with Smart Stay or Smart Pause? Imagine an iPhone where when you're texting, when you lift the phone it dials the person you are texting. Imagine an iPad with a Wacom Digitizer which is better than a marshmellow tipped stylus. Why not an iDevice with Beats Audio or maybe even Dolby Surround? I mean even Samsung has Dolby avail on some models and it sounds pretty good considering the speaker size.

I mean, since Apple is hording over $100B in cash, why did they go up $100 on the Mini to add Retina Display, when all the iPhones, iPod Touches and iPad's before it, managed to keep the same price? I mean...since they over charge for the flash storage and the rest, why jack up the price for such a simple upgrade?

How is it, there exist other devices with an iPS display, yet they manage to cost less than an APple product. How is it the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition cost $599 and yet have a higher resolution display vs the latest iPad and yet it offers, a bigger screen, high resolution, expandable storage, a stylus, more software capabilities like being able to open several apps on the screen and do it for basically the same price?

But yet when you speak against Apple, you have to be called a hater? Really? Are you as a lover so blind to reality that you can't even see how you are getting ripped off?

The only thing that is a real positive with it, is the app quality. However, isn't an app better on better hardware? YES! So why isn't Apple using better hardware? Is an Apple A7 with 64bit extensions, better than a Snapdragon 800? NO! Is it better than a Exynos Octa-core? NO! Yet how is it Samsung can place these better options in their stuff and charge equal or lower prices vs Apple who is usinglesser stuff and charging more? Maybe if you can open your eyes and see what I am saying and stop using fanboi eyes, you can see you are getting ripped off with this junk.

I wanted a new iPad to replace my aging iPad 3. But why should I go an spend another $799 for a 64GB iPad, when it offers nothing above the previous model other than a faster CPU and GPU? I play the same games. None of the games will even benefit from 64Bit...so why have it? While every piles on Samsung about having useless gimmicky features, why don't you consider some of Apples features useless? How useful is 64bit on a device with 1GB of RAM that cant even open more than one app on the screen?

Imagine an iPad that actually offers something for its over inflated price. Compare the iPad the iPad to the lastest Note 10.1 2014 Edition and you will see the iPad simply lacks versatility, it lacks substance and it lacks productivity and more. Its just a fancy iPod Touch, where on the basically level they all act 100% identical.

With the Galaxy devices, even tho on the basically level they too are 100% identical, when you reach an option like the Note, it adds more functional to make the device stand out on its own. There is NOTHING about the iPad that makes it stand out from its smaller siblings. The iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad all work identical with the iPhone only having cellular capability and making calls.

That is why last year at this time Apple had 60% marketshare and now this year Android has 60% marketshare. Its not because of all th cheap tablets. Its because so many of those tablets offer features that are above what you'd expect on your smartphone.

Laptops are just smaller desktops. We expect that laptop feature sets will be pretty much identical to a desktop. But a tablet is NOT suppose to be a larger smartphones. They are 2 distinct devices...just like a smartphone is not a PDA.

Even Apple fanboys weren't so happy about this new iPad Air. So much of same old same old. I think next year they will probably go big since they didn't do much this year. Sadly, people will still die for this..as if it's a revolutionary device lol

So while Apple is busy playing around with Bulimia nervosa, I'm getting my homework done on my Surface... While Skype chatting with my buddies... While typing here on Neowin...

Just sayin.

It's what...1mm thinner than the iPad2?
It's actually thicker than the iPad mini.

It does weigh less.

All in all it's not really a "Revolution(tm)"

They can only go so thin and only go so light.

But lighter and thinner is its feature set. I mean, all you need is a British guy with a fancy voice to explain it to you so you just fall in love and ant to go buy it. Haha!

If I was in the market for a tablet I'd be getting a Surface.

So I remember when i got my iPad 3... With the A6.... It was what, 5-6 month later that Apple came out with the iPad 4 with A6X and lightning connector.... That did **** me off a little.

So now we have the iPad Air, with the A7.... No A7X? No TouchID? Nothing new like, I don't know, a nice Touch Cover?

Will Apple come out with a new iPad Air 2 in 6 month with the A7X? Will we be screwed again?

Yes...

Maybe but Anandtech says the A7 has better graphical performance than the A6X, so if the iPad ran well on the A6X, it should still run even better on the A7.

There's arguably less of a need to update to an A7X than when they went from the A5X (which was barely adequate for the iPad 3) to the A6X.

i dont really get the thinner and lighter thing one day its going to be so thin you wont be able to see it.

My iPad is so thin i have to run around in the shower just for it to get wet. Forget cold fusion, my ipad is so thin it can split atoms, my ipad is so thin i stick 10 of them together and comb my hair with them!!!

Thinner and lighter i guess is good i spose as it paves the way for the future thin eventually transparent devices that are easily held in one hand but i think apple take the marketing of it to far, its like the evolution of products to where we want it to go. Surprised they havnt released a cave man to human (ipad 1 to ipad air) where starts of thick bulky and dumb, then showing it getting light, thinner and smarter just to accentuate the evolution of the ipad.

Its natural (technological) evolution. The first computer was the size of a house.
Soon it will be small enough, if you smash two together a black hole will appear.

'and comes with the option to purchase new versions of iPad smart covers and iPad cases' wow cool feature I can buy new accessories.

Still using the obsolete 4:3 aspect ratio I see. On that score alone, most Android tablets are way ahead.

Actually 4:3 on the ipad is probably one of the few areas I think apple got it right. In general I'm a big fan of 16:9 everywhere, or 16:10 if you must. but on a handheld pad device it just doesn't make sense. in widescreen you're basically making the device only usable in landscape mode, and even then it's stupidly wide for such a small device. if you try to hold it in portrait mode for reading or whatever, then it's just ridiculous. you also lose a significant amount of screen estate on a 10 inch 16:9 vs 10 inch 4:3.

Saying that, whenever I do end up replacing my iPad2, it will probably be a Surface or another windows based tablet which are all 16:9 anyway.

Even newbies can be right. The iPad is what it is...as the iPhone is what it is. They are both iPod Touch devices which Jobs stated was the training wheels for the iPhone. If you had owned the original iPad, you will see basically they took the OS and just made it bigger without even making adjustments for the larger screen. This didn't happen until the iPad 2. In fact, like Android, iOS apps for iPad are just redone to fit on the tablet. When Apple says it has 300,000 unique iPad apps, it is simply not true. Most of those apps appeared on iPhone first and were redone to HD for the iPad.

You must be mistaking the iPad for an Android tablet.

iOS is actually modified to suit the larger screen better on the iPad.

With the exception of iOS 7 folders, which look silly on the iPad with only nine items per page.

Must be a big freaking deal for you. I mean, you constantly hop into the Apple articles to sling mud at the company and it's products. We all get it, you don't like anything that's released unless it has a Windows flag on it. It's a tired bit. It's getting to the point where it seems like you're trying to convince yourself that it is not a big deal.

And it looks like you are following this guy around and trying to "teach" him something. You're no better.

You obviously didn't read what I said...I did say, when the iPad 2 was released Apple did at this point make use of the iOS size in its apps.

That doesn't change the fact of what I said...which was...iPad is basically using resized iPhone apps where some devs have made some changes so its less clicks to get to stuff. However, there are less than 300,000 unique iPad apps...meaning they were iPad only apps and not iPhone apps redone.

Also honest question, why is the iPad 2 still for sale and not the Ipad 3 or 4? I'm guessing just to force people to buy the latest instead of the previous generation?

I'm not hating on Apple as I have an iPhone and love but the ipad air which is basically ipad 5 has got a spec bump which was to be expected and is lighter and thinner, again to be expected.

Pretty boring announcement really.

new to the way Apple launches products ?

that will be one of the very few improvements when the release the ipad air 2 next year. s

Strange TouchID didn't make it to any of the iPads. I thought Apple was pushing that as a more secure solution. Not needed on iPads?

They could barely supply the iPhone 5s. As Hawkman says this will be held back and hailed as revolutionary next year.

Its interesting that they decided to change the name to iPad Air instead of another number.

Maybe they were tired of the same old numbering scheme. Will we see an iPad Air 2?

I am more interested in the iPad Mini!

Finally a Retina Display on iPad mini! I don't like the price though.

Stop comparing your new device with your first generation!
Intel's new CPU is 158,60,001x times faster than the first intel CPU.

I was actually looking forward to buy this iPad for my father. bad bad lazy Apple.

That's exactly why they can do whatever they want.. because consumers will wait to see what their product is before buying something else.. Very few companies have this type of loyalty..

I'm no fan or loyalty, but where I live, anything not an iPad is garbage and is considered a cheap tablet. No one will appreciate any tablet from another manufacturer.

Truth be told, I'm looking on the new Nokia tablet. The SD card option is a selling point for me.

Its not loyalty. If you bought into the iPad or iPhone since day one, that means you spent a lot of money, Which means jumping ship has to be well thought out. Fact is many won't be able to leave. If you call that loyalty, than you simply have no idea. I am so glad I left after only 2 models of iPad and iPhone. I have an iPad for my investment...but I spent way less than many.

Yes, releasing a rehash of a product shows there is no "confusion" at Apple. Bravo Apple, you have crowned yourself leading innovator, and tomorrow you will be trading your kingdom for a horse.
