Apple reveals iPad Air, thinner and faster

Apple today refreshed their iPad lineup with a brand new generation of 9.7" tablet. Sharing the exterior design of the existing iPad mini, just with a larger screen, the device is noticeably thinner and only weighs 1 Pound. At 7.5 millimetres thin, it is 20% thinner and 28% lighter than the 4th generation iPad.

The device includes a 64-bit A7 processor which will power the same retina display that has been present since 'the new iPad', released early last year. It has double the graphics performance - 72x faster than the original iPad, and 8x faster a CPU than the first.

Other improvements include dual microphones and two antennas for twice the data transfer rates. It retains the same 10-hour battery life, and comes with the option to purchase new versions of iPad smart covers and iPad cases.

The iPad will continue to compete with Microsoft's Surface 2, which was put on sale today. On sale starting at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model, the iPad Air will ship November 1st.
