I actually had to download this to test out sound input/output on a Mac.

Windows has had "Sound Recorder" since forever. How do you test recording on a Mac? I couldn't think of a way off the top of my head, but I knew of Audacity, so that's what I used.

Agreed. And it's not as easy to use as GoldWave. But Audacity does have some features that GoldWave doesn't have yet.

The look of this apps is totally unacceptable, and I find it is also a very clunky app

This is one of the key things for Audacity's usefulness I always felt, it wasn't pretty but it sure got the job done. If it's simplistic and works no complaints from me

Actually I disagree. I Love the plain look. What I hate is the ugly bulky grey look that Adobe has given all of applications including Audition. So this app is great.
