Audacity 2.0 RC3

Audacity is a free, open source digital audio editor and recording application. Edit your sounds using cut, copy, and paste features (with unlimited undo functionality), mix tracks, or apply effects to your recordings. The program also has a built-in amplitude-envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode, and a frequency-analysis window for audio-analysis applications. Built-in effects include bass boost, wah wah, and noise removal, and the program also supports VST plug-in effects.

You can use Audacity to:

  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.
  • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.

The one thing that I've learned is that some expensive pieces of software are worth paying for. I've been using Sony's Sound Forge for years, but did try my best to replace it with this. No way in hell. Maybe I'm just too used to SF but Audacity doesn't cover some very important things I need in SF.

It's too bad, though, that there aren't enough powerful alternatives (that are free).

The Audacity site makes no mention of version 2.0 RC (that I can see/find at least!) still refers to the latest "beta" of 1.3.14... so I'd be curious to see a changelog/some info about what's new in 2.0 too!
