Characters from The Hobbit set to star in Windows Phone 8 ads

Whilst many of us are waiting for the first part of The-Lord-of-the-Rings-prequel “The Hobbit” to grace our 48 frames-per-second cinema screens, Microsoft has struck a somewhat surprising advertising deal with Warner Bros.

The Windows Phone 8 campaign will be created by the agency Wunderman, and will feature characters from The Hobbit, although there aren’t any details around which characters and if the actors themselves will be present in the ads. The campaign will include digital, print, and outdoor advertising.

Unfortunately, this deal only extends to the UK, US, France, and Germany, leaving the rest of the world to hunt down the advertisements online (although I’m sure they’ll be easy to find).

This campaign is only one small part of Microsoft’s broader strategy for marketing Windows Phone 8, with a star-studded campaign already underway in some countries. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft ties Middle Earth into the Windows Phone story.

Of course, this isn’t the only Middle-Earth-inspired (and licensed) advertising taking place right now. Air New Zealand also kicked off a campaign recently, using The Hobbit’s New Zealand roots, along with a Peter Jackson cameo, as a safety video and/or parody. You can see that video below.

I hope they pull the US ads in light of the Hobbit/PETA fiasco looming.

PETA? Wtf? Did they kill animals while filming?

I totally just clicked on the video without reading and expected it to have to do with wp8. fail.

on a second note... fake characters -_- like if the pilot was gandolf, then i dont know who isnt.
And on another note. lulz for using Hobbits to sell the phone. Doesnt seem effective to me.

How do you know if it will be effective or not... you haven't seen it.

Im stating that using hobbits to sell the phone doesnt seem to be an effective method. Not because i have seen it or not, just IMO. seems a little desperate is all. Nothing we havent seen from other companies.

But who knows i guess. creatures from another world selling a phone to use in this world lol. i could see it working on fans of the movie... But the least it will do is get recognition towards the device, thats for sure.

ps: when you create an ad you dont say "lets see after the fact of spending millions* if it will be effective" - you should at least consider if it will be effective at all, which is exactly what im doing.
