Download Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 Developer Preview right now

Live Folders, a new feature in Update 1

As previously announced Microsoft’s newest Windows Phone version is now available for users in the Developer Preview program. Those of you registered can now download Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to your devices.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, or GDR1 as it’s also known, is the first update for Windows Phone devices since the launch of the new OS earlier this year.

The software upgrade brings some new features including, Live Folders, major improvements to IE11 and Cortana for new countries, specifically the UK and China. You can check out the announcement article for more info on what new features come with this update.

Later this year it will become available for all users, but right now you have to be in the Developer Preview if you want to try it out. However, signing up is free and easy and you’ll always be running the newest version of Windows Phone.

Update: Folks looks like there are two updates going out. The first one, to version 12400.899, is not GDR1/Update 1 but rather a smaller update that brings all Dev Preview devices up to date. This update was previously stopped due to issues related to BitLocker but now it seems it's going out to everybody, The second one, to version 14147.180 IS Update 1 and brings the new features mentioned above. If you only got the first one don't despair yet, the update is still spreading through servers.

What about cyan update I updated to this latest preview update but its still on Nokia black firmware is that mean we skipped cyan update??

Waiting for Cyan on my 925 (TMo) and now I guess I'll be waiting for this. Since my update check shows no updates.

Scratch that. Decided to restart my phone and try again and it found an update for 8.1.1. Still no sign of Cyan though.

Aghhhhh

In the uk and Cortana is just pants. No personality, just boring robotic voice and bing results.

Think I'm gonna be switching back to US

That was a backend issue, just look for Marcus Ash on Twitter he tweeted about it.

I got an error: 80188306 on Lumia 630. I changed region and language to english US from Polish but that is no fix. Even hard reset. What can I do ?

Only had the one update for my 928 to get into the 8.1.1 update. can say that its noticeably slower but that might just be due to the first boot syndrome on Windows Phones.

Microsoft is pushing hard on Windows Phone updates and T-Mobile still haven't approve Cyan update for Lumia 925. Getting the update for 8.1 GDR1.

I thought I'd make this a separate post.
For people getting the 8018830f error on preparing to install, this is the situation in which it happened for me (both on Lumia 925 (personal) and Lumia 625 (work) phones)
Error situation:
Current country: Netherlands
Region settings: United States
Regional format: Match phone language
Language: English (United States)

Resolved situation:
Language: English (United Kingdom)
Restart
Install update
Change back language if required.

Okay, this is getting more confusing. If we're running the 8.1 Developer Preview we've been told in order to get the Cyan update (specifically, I mean the FIRMWARE) we have to roll back to Windows Phone 8. Now we're seeing TWO updates associated with the Developer Preview of GDR1, one of which is reported to address the bitlocker issue. Are we to understand that none of this addresses the inability to get the Cyan update when it finally rolls for all devices? (I'm currently using a Lumia 1020 and a 920 as backup). Does this mean we'll STILL have to roll back in order to get the firmware? If so, then I see no point in updating until I can get the firmware update that goes with 8.1. Well, to be honest, there's absolutely nothing in GDR1 I care about, so I'm in no hurry to update anyway, but I still would like to know what the status is of the roll-back-or-not issue.

No point worrying until Cyan is out on your devices, I'm in the same boat but until Cyan is out on my 820 I'll just keep going forward :-)

Also Dp8.1u1 will include cyan afaik

Robert.E.Wade said,
No, it won't. Cyan is a firmware update for Lumia devices only, and it can only come via the carrier. DP8.1U1 is ONLY the operating system.

Cyan is a firmware update for Lumia devices
Now microsoft has bough nokia
they will provide the update. Carriers will Test the update and release on wp8.1

Had read DP8.1u1 will include it else how will DP users get it?
Can someone enlighten on this?!?

DP users need to downgrade to 8.0 until they resolve the matter. I have 8.1 Update 1 on my Lumia 920 with the Black firmware now. Cyan is a Lumia specific firmware, MS can't include it in the updates because of the other OEM's out there.

No. Just update your phone with Developer preview. When cyan is ready you will get it no matter if you are on 8.1 or 8.1 Update 1.

itisomegakai said,
Thanks so downgrade to 8.1 & install cyan
then upgrade to DP8.1u1 & retain cyan?

Is that right

Yes, but you can't do that until your carrier finally releases Cyan, which won't be for, oh... a few years ;P

Microsoft Confirms Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview Users Don't Need to Downgrade to Get Lumia Cyan

Yea, I just saw that this morning! Wonderful news, now they just need to release the hold on DP users when Cyan is released for their device. I am hoping to see the Lumia 920 on what appears to be AT&T's Thursday release cycle AND the release of DP users for the Cyan update.

Everything seems to be fine. The only issue was needing to reinstall the Live Lock Beta. Really hoping Cyan comes out soon for my 920 so I could go get a FitBit.

English Cortana is crap :(

Sounds OK, but limited functionality. By which I mean she can't converse with you like the US version. No jokes, stories, singing. Bitch wont even say my name :'(

Which is why it's alpha and same reason they didn't release it for UK in the first place. People complained because they didn't release her outside the USA and now that they did, complains are about being limited...

I hope they fixed the 4-month old bug with their OFFICIAL remote desktop app, and fliiping the glance screen upside-down. I damn cannot believe why this cannot be sorted out in 4 months? There were couple of remote desktop app updates: DIDNT fix it, there were 2-3 8.1 DP updates: DIDNT fix it, there was a nokia firmware update: Cyan, it DIDNT fix it (at least according to some people who replied to my question after the first phones received Cyan). Totally pathehtic!

I hope they fixed the 4-month old keyboard layout regression introduced in some languages (e.g. swiss french who switched from qwertz to qwerty). That's a really dumb issue with an easy fix (like... just putting back what was there before)

That was my first thought too. I'm at work so I had to stop myself from getting stuck in straight away before it became too obvious that I was playing with my phone.

I thought that was the Lumia Cyan firmware, not an OS update

Hearing her do imitations is good 'nuff for me :D Plus, there's still features like auto-on for WiFi when arriving at a favorite place, and notifications on when you should leave with current traffic to make it to an appointment. At least, does the traffic service work in the UK? Works flawlessly in NL.

Don't get to excited.. I heard it sucks without any features
From who? This is the very first day this update is rolling out, I doubt anyone has tested Cortana enough to know how well it works in the UK.

Yeah the traffic stuff works in the UK when I've used drive as a sat nav. Just updated to 8.1 and enjoying playing around with cortana. Seems cool, but I probably wont use it like.

can you manage your interests on bing.co.uk?

Just had a look in the settings on bing.co.uk and it doesn't seem like it.

The browser seems way faster in this update.

Great news, but i get a error message. "Update is downloaded, but it can not open file. Error code (80188306)" with a Nokia Lumia 930 Dutch version. ?? I allready did a soft reset and it's not working. Any ideas ?

Yep i allready did those 4 steps. Soft reset, enough free space like 21 GB, chance regions, full battery and i have allready Cyan update on it. Nothing works for me.

WTF?! Changed my language to English (United Kingdom), after changing back my region to US and language to English (United States) on my 625, and it's now installing.
Trying the same thing on my 925 now. Still consider you're getting a different error message than me, but at least people who get my error message might have a solution now.

had the same problem.
Resetting the phone did the trick

I had the 8018830F one on swiss/french. Switched to english US which was already installed, didn't work. Switched to english UK, and it went a lot faster on the "preparing to install" step and is now installing. This is really weird, anyone knows what causes this ?

No, I ment "No", because what you said, is incorrect, it's not only Australia. ;)
Okay, I see what you're trying to do, but you're still wrong. "Yes" was the appropriate answer to his question. He never said "only."

Can anyone confirm if they have added support for more VPN tunnelling protocols like SSTP etc ?

God I hope so. The VPN support is really weak at this point.

They need generic SSL VPN support...

Its a miracle! L2tp with IPsec support well that's usable at least still holding out for sstp till the end of this release though

Awesome! Updating now. Build 12400.899 was released back on July 16, but Microsoft suspended it after the Bitlocker issue started popping up.

I'm actualy surprised that they made such a huge build jump. From 12400 to 14147. That's almost as much as 8.0 update 3 to 8.1!

Anyone got it installed in the UK and has Cortana active? My bing.com on UK settings still does not show those interests so I guess not

Got it installed and Cortana set up and working fine for me and I have no personalisation options on bing.com either.

Yeah, she does now but not on the 4th August :p

The only thing is that she no longer does impressions in the UK.
