I would also go with KMPlayer, used to use VLC but KMPlayer is far superior, this must be the best all round performer.

Because CCCP is THE pack that resolves all of your playback issues, especially with the various formats of HD content available lately. Not to talk about better image quality and less resources being used while watching the content. I personally disable all GOM's internal codecs and rely on the pack that is officially endorsed by the Matroska project and numerous online anime fansub groups. It's just that GOM's beautiful user interface and so thoughtfully designed controls won me over the years and I continue to use it; thankfully, it plays really well with the DirectShow filters.

I'm using it under Windows 7 x64 right now, and it works fine, even without codec packs installed so far :D
It even plays videos with H264 without additional codecs.
