After many rumors and leaks, Rockstar Games has officially confirmed the existence of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, and it is coming soon to all modern platforms including mobile. The announcement arrived celebrating the upcoming 20th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III, which launched the series from 2D to 3D.
The package includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. While no gameplay footage nor exact upgrades were unveiled today, Rockstar said graphics and gameplay have been enhanced "across-the-board", but they will be present without disrupting the original's look and feel. A prior leak said the games will now be running on Unreal Engine, though it has not been confirmed yet.
"We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the Grand Theft Auto fans who have supported the games over the past two decades," Rockstar adds. "Your love and appreciation for these games has helped push the Grand Theft Auto series forward with every iteration."
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will be available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch later this year. The Android and iOS version will land in the first half of 2022. Details on the release date, pricing, and enhancements will be available later.
There is some sad news though. Starting next week, October 11, Rockstar will begin removing the original versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from all digital retailers across PC and console. Those who own the games already will still be able to play them.
