Microsoft launches Xbox LIVE Rewards program

xbox live rewards

Microsoft has officially launched their Xbox LIVE Rewards program today. The program is open to all Xbox LIVE members, both paid and free.

Though the program is open to the Silver Xbox LIVE members, the Gold Xbox LIVE members will be able to take advantage of more opportunities to earn reward points. Users will earn points for things like purchasing an Xbox Live Gold membership, or purchase game and movies from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. According to USA Today, Microsoft will also be offering surveys and promotions to help users earn more points.

Get this: You can earn Rewards Points for doing what you do best - having fun! Whether it's games or entertainment, with Xbox LIVE Rewards it's easy.

Microsoft began testing the rewards system in early November but announced many details or an official release date. They have, rather quietly, launched the rewards program and it is open to all Xbox LIVE members.

Not in the uk it seems

We're Sorry...

Unfortunately, residents of your area are not eligible to participate in Xbox LIVE Rewards. Please see the Terms and Conditions for full eligiblity details.

As the program grows in the future your region could be included, so please check back.

I'm in the UK and signed up no problem. Sounds like it thinks you aren't in the UK for some reason

It should be added to the article that the program is "open to legal residents of the 50 United States (including Washington, D.C.) and the United Kingdom".

This is brilliant! Can't believe people just complaining about this not being enough, we had nothing before, to me this is like an unexpected bonus.

Not available in Australia.. another fail from Microsoft.

Sadly when there are a lot of licensing and regulations from the content providers and distribution of content to many countries outside of the US, things like this at the very least take longer to get going and sometimes the country/region's laws make it impossible.

So when you get left out, Microsoft isn't the one you need to get angry with, as often they would like to offer all their services and features to everyone. Unless you have some conspiracy theory of why they just hate your country and would intentionally hurt their customer base in your country for no reason...

You're blaming Microsoft for Austrailia's prehistoric censorship? Tell you what, why don't YOU launch a multi-national service from the US and see how difficult it is for you to instantly launch all your services everywhere.

Oh, but it's so much easier to blame Microsoft, right? Because obviously they purposefully ignore a region that can make them money, right?

Why exactly would censorship stop this from being released in Australia? xbox live rewards is already in the UK and they have Internet Filtering Censorship already in place.

This has nothing to do with the government proposed Mandatory Internet Filter.. R18 Classification for games or any kind of censorship at all..

You lose.. good day sir.

Other than eating, sleeping, and pooping, that's pretty much what we're programmed to do.

Why is that THE thing to do? He just means people need to relax and enjoy free stuff!

It seems you are not a young adult then.

yesssss. xbl points for nothing really. i guess this is for the huge price tag we have to pay for XBL memberships but the content already satisfies the price...now i get free MS points!! yay!!

Emphasis on HUGE, cause it would be insane for someone to play three times or double just to play a single game. (Except most gamers do pay for WoW/OtherMMO subscriptions, and then also pay for Teamspeak servers for their guilds and buy items from the game stores, etc etc.)

The XBox Live Gold subscription is rather cheap, and provides a lot of features that people that hate MS or hate XBox don't have a clue about.

I agree. gimme gimme gimme... my next xbl gold renewal will be redeemed in points!!

From Reddit:

"Here's the reward value for each action with a gold account, with points converted to dollars at official prices:
1 month gold renew: 0.125
3 month gold renew: 0.375
12 month gold renew: $2.50
Buy gold family pack: $5.00
First gold purchase or renewal: $1.25
First Marketplace purchase: $1.25
Activate Netflix: $1.25
Take a monthly survey: 0.25

I think they are still having issues with the site. I log in with my account, it states that I am logged in but it doesn't load my XBox account and sais I should buy a Gold Membership. WTF?

So much haterade being served tonight, nice free perk.

its not free, since you are paying for "gold" membership that should be free in first place.

Really? Why?

nonsense, but thanks for posting something silly.

It's free for both Gold and Silver members. My god, at least try to read the post.

1) Silver members can also earn rewards, and they pay NOTHING.

2) Why should Gold be free? You get access to a lot of free content and deals ALONG with the extra gameplay features that Gold offers. Seriously, people pay nearly 3 times as much to play WoW, yet the same people see the Gold membership as 'expensive'.... Geesh.

If you are referencing that Sony's PS3 online is FREE, this is no longer true, as they have the PLUS version now as well to get access to the special features and access to certain games/applications. Besides, even with the PLUS or FREE version of the PS3 online, there are still games and other content from game developers that you have to purchase that is available to XBox Live Gold members for no additional charge.

Geesh again.

you'll probably end up having to buy a good 2 years worth of xbox live gold to get enough points to buy anything worthwhile...watch & wait...

Why on earth would anyone look at it like that?

Of course they aren't going to give you enough points to net a free game. It's just a small token not lottery winnings.

jeeeeez

Complaining about free stuff? You haters are sad and hilarious.

Really?

Besides, it isn't like it is limited to Gold members only, so people that pay nothing can earn points as well.

Before complaining, have you realized that providing points to Silver members may allow them to acquire a Gold membership once they achieve a certain number of points?

Have you ever seen a reward system which >not< like this?

zerokool316 said,
Eh watch microdud put an expiration date on those points, this is pointless

So you know they are putting an expiration on them? Source?

Anyway, what does it matter? They are giving people a way to earn points by just doing what a lot of users already do, with no extra work. And for people that want to take time to do survey's which also gives them a voice in providing feedback, they can earn more points.

Even if it is a just a few points here and there, it is better than no points that they are giving away now, right?

noice! the points rewarded seems a little chincy imo. I think a year of gold should reward you with more than 2 songs off the zune marketplace. probably enough points for a new hd movie would be more decent.
