Microsoft: Xbox One will support up to eight wireless controllers at once

If you managed to get an Xbox One game console when it launches sometime later in November, you will be able to connect up to eight of its official wireless controllers to the console at once. That's the new word from the controller's product page on Xbox.com and it certainly opens up some new possibilities in terms of making Xbox One co-op games that can support up to eight players at once.

The product page also confirms that the Xbox One Wireless Controller will have a range of up to 30 feet. If you want to get Sony's rival PlayStation 4, you may be disappointed to learn that it will only support up to four of its DualShock 4 controllers at once, according to a Twitter statement from Shuhei Yoshida, the head of Sony's worldwide studios.

This is just the latest in a long line of tidbits about the Xbox One controller from Microsoft. The company will bundle one of them with every console and additional controllers can be bought for $59.99 via pre-order. Microsoft has also announced it plans to add PC driver support for the Xbox One controller but that it will not be available until sometime in 2014.

I agree that 8 player is overkill and may be it is an unsolicited featured.
player = most of the time
2 players = yes, fine.
4 players = ... well, it is not common but still cool (such Snes multitap).
+4 players = online games.

I fact, even exists a game for snes that allows 8 player at the same time (2 x multitap).

Sports games that support 7 players. same screen.
APF 2K8
FIFA Soccer 08/9
FIFA Street 3
NBA 2K7/8/9
NHL 08/9
NHL 2K8/9
Pixeljunk Racers (PSN)
Pro Evo Soccer 2008/9
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008/9 (6 players)

I'm sorta glad to hear it, but am wondering how much use it'll see. Maybe an 8•player wrestling game? Sports? Trivia/quiz/casual?

Hard to imagine a 3x3 Marvel Vs Capcom tag-team game...

Even if a game would support 8 players it would probably be one of those game where the screen isn't split up and you just pass the controller around.

We need some good xbl arcade games that support 8 players.

An arcade game remake of Super Nintendo Super Off Road would be amazing with 8 players
Some one please remake this ^-^

no that is a first person game. Here is what I'm talking about(birds eye view)

A trivia game has to be really really good for the cost of the extra controllers or it could be byoc (bring your own controller). Something as good as super nintendo family feud. That game had so many questions and was so much fun with family and friends.

If they do this it will be good. But I hope there are more 2 player games for Xbox.

I miss need for speed being two players.

Excellent.. I just need to shell out an extra $720 so my friends can play! (yes I know some can just bring theirs from home), its a joke!

It's a great family or 4th of July party feud type of game like... "Survey said" gosh forgot that game or Trivial Pursuit, monopoly (that will be a riot if 8 players are involve)

8 is overkill. I can't imagine how any game, even sports ones are playable for 8 local players. Though, for me 4 is useless too. I rarely even have 2 controllers connected.

Ohh I dunno.. how about a game where you're all in one large vehicle and each player controls turrets etc? A tank is ideally a 2 player machine minimum if you think about it.

This would be sick for games like Fusion Frenzy! I REALLY hope they bring that back as an arcade game!

Oh totally! That would be awesome!!

8 people would be awesome, if you had a big enough screen. I remember back when the N64 first supported 4 people and would play Mario Kart or Golden Eye on a we were all play on small tube TVs, that was rough

Yup, I remember that too. All I could think of after seeing the article headline was how big of a TV would be needed for a game that splits up the screen for every player. I can't complain too much, I have a projector with 106" screen, but STILL, splitting that up 8 ways can be a headache.

Kinect tracks six players but the console recognizes 8 controllers?

sounds like a great match up there.
Ooooh one more thing that PS4 can't do. I'm sick of that approach. Now the spec whore kidlets will come in and tout faster ram, faster processor, blah blah blah.

I just want the console to launch already.

Limited controllers is most likely a hardware constraint.

It uses bluetooth, and the PS3 could support more than 4, I am guessing the "limitation" is more due to common sense. How many people are going to fork over $472 for 8 controllers? How many games would you expect to support that? I RARELY have use for 4 controllers, and outside of sports games, never saw a single game that would use more than 4.

Yeah, because nobody could bring a controller with them to a friends house..

Exactly. And yeah, because people pay full RRP for controllers...

8 Controller support has to be for the Homies over in Europe who probably have crazy Fifa gameplay going on with their friends (mates)...

Not sure how well that would work if its anything but turn based. In sports games, you tend to see the entire team and don't need a menu. 8 point of views and menus would get a bit crowded.
