New screenshots and features of Wave 4 Hotmail

LiveSide.net (via LiveSino.net) has gotten their hands on some screenshots of the upcoming Wave 4 update of Microsoft's Hotmail webmail service. Not only did the screenshots sport the new logo that Neowin reported last week, it also revealed a bunch of new features. In this M3 build, here's what was noticed:

  • Unified Bing powered search box
  • Improved email filters based on sender information - options to view emails only from your contacts, social network updates, Windows Live Groups, and everyone else
  • Quick views - quickly see emails with flags, attached photos, or attached documents (Documents will likely integrate with Office Web Apps)
  • Web messenger - moved to bottom left corner and has a searchable contact list
  • "Sweep" menu - allows you to perform bulk actions on all emails in a folder (a full page of 35 at a time), such as move all from, delete all from, mark this folder as read, and empty this folder.

Um, unless it's hiding under a new drop-down somewhere, I've noticed a significant change:

SORT BY. Son of a bitch, Microsoft, where did it go? It's right there on my Live mail page right now, but it's not in that screen shot. I swear to god, if you're taking away my 'sort by' like you're trying to turn into some ridiculous Google "Just download a client then!" crap, I want a divorce.

Wow it looks....exactly the same, boring and ugly ui. It's as if MS see that Google have the current hit/perfect email design and can not copy it so have to give us something second rate. Bleh.

So this is the 1000000000xxxxxx update to Wave now.. Jesus H Christ *puts beer in the air* here's to another 100000000000xxxxxxx updates.

I think the "35 at a time" refers to Wave 3 Hotmail, not the new Sweep function in Wave 4?

I used Hotmail all the time, but Microsoft (as expected), seems to be falling behind. Sticking with Gmail for now. And by the way, just downloaded MS Office 2010 (via TPB), and, well... just wished I'd seen the screen-shots first. There's so much white I think I'm seeing death's white light. (Tip: If you download MSO2010 and hate all the white, go to options and change from Silver to Blue/Black) Why didn't I just do that and instead chose to complain? Well I don't want to overwork myself. I mean come on, with all the Facebook status updating, iGoogle news reading,

And will Wave 4 be updating Photo Gallery AND Movie Maker, god I hope so. Photo Gallery really needs better integration into the OS.

Everything should be upgraded, that's probably why it's taking so long. If they did update things out of sync we'd probably get half the stuff by now and the other half later this year. Things that need more work/time like Movie Maker, compared to smaller updates like this for Hotmail.

Why do you want imap so badly? You can't sync your contacts or calender with it. What we really want is either free exchange like Google Sync provides or for Microsoft to finally allow people to use deltasync.

Well the only thing I want is the ability to sync my e-mail on the go. Right now I have over 1000 email messages being downloaded using POP3 and labelling every single one of them as UNREAD!

I'd take anything other than POP, to be honest. I prefer Hotmail to Gmail, but Microsoft is driving me away from it because it's worthless on my iPhone as it is currently.

Ask Apple to license the exchange activesync API then? Google did last year, which is kinda funny.

They do, it doesn't change how Hotmail works.

My Hotmail address is pretty much my junkmail address now. I shifted to Gmail a while back, and it's felt much better.

Although it's good to see that Microsoft are continuing to improve the service and bring new features, the idea of using Bing makes me like Hotmail even less.

That's funny, Gmail is my junkmail address, always has been. I have a hotmail address for work and it barally gets any spam it seems.

I get no junk mail with my gmail account but still use my hotmail account as my main address. I found that when I cancelled my hotmail plus account, I went from no junkmail to at least 5-10 a day. It started the day after I cancelled it.

It's nice to see some more fantastic new features cropping up. This version is looking better than ever. I hope conversations become supported by the Outlook Hotmail Connector. I can't think why they wouldn't be. It'll be fantastic when they do because I hate it when a new Neowin thread reply comes through to my folder on a seperate email, when it relates to a previous email. That's the one thing I miss about Gmail - having all replies to Neowin threads grouped under one email with the thread title. It makes for much easier catching up

I was looking for this comment. It'd be cool if MS followed suit like Google did with GMail.

looks the bloody same

The overall design is very similar, but there are some minor changes. The big idea for this version of Hotmail was to add a lot of new, much needed, features like conversations etc.

Something like that.

You know. I really wish they'd switch back to the classic hotmail look. I really liked that. I stopped using windows live ever since they took that away. REGARDLESS of all the integration.

Thats such an ignorant statement. I can garauntee tons of people prefer the "LOOK". of the old site. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FUNCTIONALITY! - i wish i could swear!

I like the new (well not "new" but the newest) look. I guess it just matters via who is using it.

If you could give some reasons, maybe, I could see your point. Otherwise people may think it is just a matter of "aw its different. I guess I have to use SOOO much effort in relearning again." New looks often excite me...if the good features are still there.

Not surprised to see more integration with Bing, it seems to be cropping up anywhere. A search done from a Bing powered site like Hotmail does that count towards the % market share headline figures we see?
