Notepad++ 6.3.3

Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL License.

Based on the powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. By optimizing as many routines as possible without losing user friendliness, Notepad++ is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions. When using less CPU power, the PC can throttle down and reduce power consumption, resulting in a greener environment.

What's new in this version:

  • Add remembering folding between sessions feature.
  • Optimize startup (loading last session) performance.
  • Add multi-select feature in Document List Panel and Close/Keep the selected files commands (right click).
  • Add new spell checker plugin(DSpellCheck).

Flo's Notepad2 is better if you looking for something lightweight.

Does it support tabs? The main reason I like Notepad++ is because of the tabbed UI.

Nope, I find it to be a nice replacement for the built in Notepad since it understands Unix-style line endings, has some syntax highlighting, code folding and all; but it's not at the level of Notepad++.

Tabs are indeed a nice feature, along with the plugin system and other goodies; I have them both installed for those reasons too.
