Ahead Software, creators of Nero Burning ROM also have some fine tools for checking what your cd/dvd-rom and burner is capable of. In addition to measuring the actual speed of your hardware, CD Speed, for example, also checks for errors on cd's you might have. Another option i found very useful is that the program can measure available space on a cd-r in case you want to do a little overburning. On the site you'll also find and equalent to your dvd-drive.
