Poll: Consumers significantly more likely to purchase PlayStation 4 than Xbox One

Both Microsoft and Sony will release their upcoming consoles in November, marking a major battle for the next generation of gaming. A new poll indicates Sony may have an advantage in the marketplace, showing a significant preference for its PlayStation 4.

According to the Reuters poll, 26 percent of the 1,297 respondents surveyed online said they were likely to purchase the PS4, while only 15 percent said they were likely to purchase Microsoft's Xbox One. The gap widened among younger respondents, with 41 percent of the 408 people surveyed younger than 40 choosing the PS4 and 27 percent picking the Xbox One.

The accompanying Reuters article doesn't clarify the poll's methodology, such as if consumers were selected at random or had to opt in to respond.

If the poll truly represents the average consumer, it could indicate Microsoft has yet to make up for the controversy surrounding its upcoming console. Microsoft reversed many of its digital rights management policies for the Xbox One, including an Internet connection requirement and limitations on used game sales. Despite the reversal, some users were unhappy with the choice and began a petition to bring back some of the DRM policies, such as a family game sharing program.

Christopher Turner, one of the poll's respondents, indicated the reversal was a reason he's favoring the PS4, saying Microsoft "couldn't make up their mind and Sony hadn't wavered from the beginning." Turner also favored the PlayStation 4 based on its game selection, he said.

"The PlayStation 4 is for both hardcore and casual gamers," he added.

Another hurdle Microsoft may have to overcome among consumers is its price tag. The Xbox One costs $499 in the U.S., $100 more than the PS4; the margin is similar in other territories. Microsoft has touted the inclusion of a next-generation Kinect motion sensor as a major advantage for the Xbox One, however.

Just want to know, the Xbox Live, are they also allowing the services to move to the XB1 like Sony's PS+ is available for PS3, Vita and PS4?
Hope you guys understand what I'm asking.

Microsoft is too American for my liking, they have geared the xbone heavily around TV (netflix, pay per view) which is utterly useless out side of America, worse actually, as it makes the console feel hollow or gives those damb warnings "sorry, not available in your country", which makes me feel like I am getting ripped off because I can't access the full potential of the unit.

I've stopped pc gaming a while ago when I got my mac laptop and got a 360. I am leaning towards a PS4 over the XBox simply because of the Kinect. They want to charge me $100 for something I don't want or need.

It would be more of a toss up for me if Microsoft was going to match the price of the PS4. Right now, taking everything in from the previous generation and making some assumptions about the next generation: The PS4 looks like the better buy.

Microsoft's decision to bundle Kinect wasn't a very good one IMO. I base my opinion on the fact that my family has the XBox 360 with Kinect and just don't get a whole lot out of it. Maybe the kids play a game on it once a month...maybe...

Won't be upgrading until middle of next year sometime. Lots can change by then. Wouldn't be surprised if MS comes to their senses and release an XBox One w/o Kinect sometime after release. Especially if PS4 sales dominate the XBox One. I bet they will drop Kinect in a heart beat if they start getting a lot of pressure from investors.

I ordered the PS4, mainly because I've had such a good experience with the PS3 over the years. I hardly turn on the Xbox, though. The UI is just too tacky with all the ads and crap. I can't find anything I'm looking for half the time.

PS4 for me as I don't game online and don't want to be charged to use my TV catch up services!

A real shame actually I was fully prepared to jump ship to Microsoft this time around... maybe in another 10 years.

Said news boys and girls is that PS4 has HDCP enable with Games output from what sony saying that mean you can't record your gameplay with Hauppauge HD-PVR 2 Gaming Edition, Elgato Game Capture HD, AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable(C875) nor AVerMedia Live Gamer HD.
To me both Microsoft and Sony will release their upcoming consoles failures, I be look at upcoming Steam Machine, Steam OS in stead.

Gonna go with the ps4 at first. I loved my XBox and like my 360 despite the 2 hardware failures i had but i'm not paying 100$ more for Kinect since i wont use it. As for the TV stuff my PVR can already do most of them and i don't want to turn on my console everytime i watch the TV.

My xbox live sub ends january 2014 so it will be a good time to switch.

i looked at both

both have the games i want

1 is 100$ more than the other
1 forces me to buy a camera i will NEVER USE

i will get both in time but to start is PS4 ill take the extra 100 and get a game and or another controller

You can get a game AND a controller for 100 bucks? Wtf? I can barely get a game for that money.

Although same here, since I will not use kinect anyway I'll be getting the PS4 first.

Switching (initially) to PS4 from Xbox - as soon as Microsoft buckles and releases an Xbox One package without a compulsory gimmick that I will never use - charging and extra $100 for a dust collector - then I'll buy an Xbox One as well - hopefully Microsoft wakes up before Sony gets too far ahead (and before the next Halo and Gears come out because it will hurt not being able to play 2 of my favorite frachises).

For now every game I want to play is also available on the PS4 or the PC (Titanfall) and Sony seem to put out better exclusives these days.

The elephant in the room here though - is the Steambox ...

Xbox one for me, I used to love pc gaming but with all the cheating/hacking I went to console and won't look back. IMO, MS needs to stop charging people to use Netflix and other apps. I also believe they should sell the one with no Kinect. To me the value is there....

Thats fine with me, less kids playing on the xbox one. I can't wait to get mine, have it paid off with battlefield paid off as well. its going to be awesome

Cool thing about having money is that I will buy the PS4 and Xbox One and I don't have to bitch about the one I won't buy because I can't afford it.

I'm not planning to buy either one at launch. I will most likely be picking a ps4 first since it will most likely have more jrpgs

Xbox has Halo so i'll be getting it. The PS3 didn't really have any games I liked until The Last of Us.

+1

I have both 360 and PS3, and really, Last of US was the only game I bought for the PS3, rest of its use for Blu-Ray and 3D

"The gap widened among younger respondents"

Oh come on. I know Reuters throws math on the ground, but we're smarter than that.

Those numbers show that the PS4 is about 2x as popular in the >=40 group, but only about 1.5x as popular in the <40 group.

<40 ratio of PS4s/Xboxes: (41% of 408) / (27% of 408)
>=40 ratio: (26% of 1297 - 41% of 408) / (15% of 1297 - 27% of 408)

I am not really worried about day 1 sales just who offers the better experiences and games. This is a 5 to 7 year race.

Was just talking about this at work today. One of the reps came in and, for whatever reason, talked about how sad he was to not be going back to Xbox because of what he had heard about the 24/7 DRM. I told him that Microsoft did a 180 on that, and explained it in better detail, but it does go to show that their changing of direction did have a negative effect overall as some people are apparently still confused about it.

Anyway, PS4 for me. I'm getting an XBO from work so I'll only have one console to get myself.

Most people don't know exactly what DRM is or how it works anyway. It was a pretty shameless lying campaign headed up by antiquated disk rental and resale companies. They're just trying to hold onto that dead business model a few more years.

People explained many times what was wrong with MS DRM system. The complains were perfectly legit. Yet some people are still blinded by their love for Microsoft. It is sad imo.

The only thing MS needed to do was to remove the 24 hours check. Nobody asked MS to remove what was good with the system.

I will be PS4 at least at first anyway. Sony has more exclusives that interest me than Microsoft does. Things like The Last of Us and Ni no Kuni this year alone made the PS3 much more attractive to me. The 360 had Halo, Gears of War and Forza as some great exclusives too but they are not all that often and I expect things to continue, at least in the beginning, for the PS4.

I will no doubt pick up a One at some point in the future though but it will be PS4 on release day for me

I don't live in a big enough place for Kinect and the TV integration will most likely interfere with my cable box and XBMC. I'm going with PS4 since I don't need any of the MS exclusives.

Though I can respect your OPINION, the potential for Kinect is huge and given time and developer support could be a truly worthwhile piece of hardware... All while Sony *thinks* they're competing with Move... LOL

At least elaborate on why. If it isn't for you, then fine, it isn't for you. It doesn't make it stupid. I use mine almost daily just for voice commands alone. To each their own.

Moving from 360 to PS4 and also will upgrade the old q6600 for bf4

Dont want kinect or useless TV integration stuff that doesnt work in the UK.

By "works" you mean the HDMI pass through is enabled? That's not much of a feature for the UK...

Microsoft have gone on record to say that the additional stuff will be added in the weeks after launch. With the sheer number of TV options around the world, it's impossible to have the full suite of integration ready for all countries and all TV providers at launch. That doesn't mean it's not coming though.

No thanks. Xbox One definitely has more value and bang for the buck than PS4. I'll be sticking with XB1.

I agree, I'm eventually gonna get both. But definitely getting the XB1 first.

I'm sorry, but I'm sticking with my pre-order of Xbox One because for an additional $100, it is more bang for the buck. In addition, I can do more than just gaming with Xbox One. PS4 is pretty much the same, and no technological advances other than new graphics.

You're saying it's more bang for the buck because it costs more? I don't think that means what you think it means.

You can watch various streaming services, listen to music, rent videos, etc with both the PS4 and One, what are the differences that warrant an extra $100? The camera that nobody uses? If you want that on PS4 then spend $60 not $100. You think the PS4 will have less camera games because it's not included by default? Since devs are already making them on the One and the architecture is similar, it's easy to port the games over. Missing the TV functionality? If you still have cable then switch inputs. Objectively I don't see anything worth spending $100 on.

You really think that a $60 PS4 Eye can compare to what Kinect can do? Can your Eye detect heart rate by viewing your skin color that your eyes cannot see? Can your Eye really do voice command like Kinect? Will you be able to switch input as fast? And NO, I DON'T want to spend $60 that I will definitely not use AT ALL. I would rather use a Nintendo Wii if I would use that kind of technology.

What you are not realizing is that Kinect can do more than just movement, it can incorporate itself with other games that requires a regular Xbox controller if the developer added support to it. Apparently, you have not used or at least own one.

The architect might be similar, but MS incorporate Kinect into the CPU for better performance. Now let us see if the PS4 Eye will run as smooth as Kinect supported games as you mentioned when they come out.

Yet they're using it only for Fantasia and they took it out of Ryse and Crimson Dragon... I don't believe it's as revolutionary as you think it is, and it's not how I want to play games. I've used a Kinect, and no, I don't want to buy one.

Where in my comments that I stated that it is revolutionary? Can you please quote me on that. I just like the fact that with an extra $100 I can do other things that PS4 can't. Do you also know that MS' plan is to incorporate some of the tech they are using in their 88 Acres, dubbed as the city of the future, in to Xbox?

The way I see it, if an extra $100 can provide me with additional tech in its lift span, then by God, I'll pay for that extra $100. You pay for that extra $60 for Eye, and see where it can bring you.

You have to remember, MS is no longer calling Xbox One a gaming console. It is now an entertainment console. If you are into gaming with same old thing that only includes advance graphics, then by all means, use your money for PS4.

'Poll: Consumers significantly more likely to purchase PlayStation 4 than Xbox One'.
Neowin: Members significantly more likely to purchase Xbox One than PlayStation 4.

Price is probably a big factor and the fact that games don't carry over from last gen makes it easier to jump from one to the other. Could be a fresh start for a large pool of gamers.

Personally, I would never consider the PS4 as a primary console if the dual shock wasn't improved and all feedback thus far said they have caught up with the 360 pad. Big hurdle for me and others which is now overcome.

Remains to be seen how good Sony can make PSN which now requires a fee for online play but not apps or free to play and MMOs which is at least a plus point against Xbox Live which puts pretty much everything behind the Gold paywall. I think it may be a problem for gamers, do you pay two subs for two consoles or more likely to stick to one platform?

Games, I always leaned more to Xbox, Halo and select others but Microsoft pretty much giving up years ago has left a bad taste in my mouth. They are ramping up studios now but I will believe it when I see the variety of good games and hard to trust that they won't just rely on 3rd party after a few years again while rotating tired franchises or whatever hit they come up with next. At least Sony keeps pumping out new IP and takes a chance. Halo 4 was a let down and 343 have a lot of work to get me interested in picking up Halo again. They pretty much destroyed it in one game, not a bad game of course but the ideas and direction are horrific.

Won't be interested in buying either console for a year or so. Hopefully by that time, more true colours are showing and proof in the pudding.

I look forward to the next 5-10 years where fanboys will continue to fight over which one has won the console gaming market, where in reality they are neck and neck in sales (Like the PS3 and X360)

Turner also favored the PlayStation 4 based on its game selection, he said.

i guess hes not a big AAA kind of guy and favors indie games

vcfan said,

Yeah, I can't say I agree with his statement on that. I can understand a preference for either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, but they both have extremely strong line-ups, and the Xbox One appears to have more big-budget titles at the moment.

"couldn't make up their mind and Sony hadn't wavered from the beginning."

That sounds like politics and not technology. What exactly did they ask? Did they ask which one they would buy or which company they thought was playing the viral marketing better?

I will be as well. At this point I still have 2 years paid in XBox Live... Not really looking to pay for a different sub unless my current one runs out first.

Plus with all the back and forth Microsoft did when they killed DRM they dropped region locking on the games as well.

Two years of live is worth less than the difference between XB1 and PS4 (not at MSRP but at prices you commonly find it)

Except you'll have to pay the Sony subscription too.

Well I wouldn't say I'm held hostage. If I didn't pre-pay I could of just cancelled and switched.

It will be interesting to see what will happen with Steam Machines. It could end up being the best choice for next year.

Also, PC gamers are missing out. So stupid that people limit themselves and look down on consoles. I'll be getting a PS4, Xbox One and continue to game on my PC. I'm a real gamer, I don't limit myself.

Not all of us have the ability to live such lives of luxury

Besides, how are they missing out? While console gamers are enjoying the "lush 1080p next gen resolution", PC gamers are already moving towards 1440p and triple monitor Eyefinity.

Sounds like everybody misses out on something

Gamers are moving towards Eyefinity 4k gaming. Once 4k monitors come way down in price in a few years.

Life of luxury? I wouldn't call that a life at all, unless a totally wasted life is called that!

With what little gaming I do, or my kid even, who used to be hooked on the junk, PlayStation still rules in our book.

GTX780, 65" HDTV, Xbox 360 controller for windows-love my rig, but playing GTA V on my PS3...and yes, the graphics suck! Crazy jaggies. I was planning on a new console, but not any more...I think we'll see stuff "ported" in a much better and faster way this gen...

How's that Red Dead Redemption port doing for you? Oh, that's right there isn't one

Just one reason why sticking solely to PC gaming is a silly idea
