Start8 0.95

Start8 gives Windows 8 users the ability to bring the start menu back to their desktop. Not only does it bring the start menu back, you also get many customization options and can either go with the more traditional Windows 7 look, or go for a Windows 8 style.

It also goes beyond just the start menu by giving users the option to go directly to the desktop when logging in, skipping the Metro interface altogether.

New in the v0.95 update:

  • Adds a completely new UI
  • Pinning support for jump lists
  • New default theme
  • New start button
  • Metro/Modern apps have their own "Modern UI Applications" folder
  • Search now searches Control Panel
  • Search now adds directory and UNC path browsing
  • Shift + right-click shows RunAs optio
  • Ctrl + shift when launching an app will launch elevated

is only with me that when i search for something on it the CPU % of explorer.exe goes almost to 100% and stays that way after i leave the Start?

i have to restart explorer or kill the thread SHCore.dll!DllGetClassObject+0x642c on Process Hacker to stop it

anyone else with the same problem ?

Edit: it seems that depends how many characters you type, for each character it adds 15-20% to cpu use but dont get released after leaving search

Have you disabled the Windows search indexer?

Search should drop to 0% once the search has finished so it sounds like something is stalling the searches, possibly some shell extension?

Yes i had Windows search indexer disabled, enabling it fix it

better put some check for the service, many people disable it or the people will start wondering why Start8 makes windows so slow

Thanks for the tip

I think 4.99 is a good price, but if you're not super into having to have the old start menu, Start Menu Modifier works GREAT!!

Never version is an improvement overall, I purchased it, I think 4.99 is pretty fair price for what it does, I have one suggestion though the option to allow clicking on the Superbar icon and bring up just the FULL Windows 8 Start Screen should be under 'Windows 8 Style' and not under 'Windows 7 Style' this setup option let me to believe there was no option to bring up The Full Screen Windows 8 Start Screen, that setup can be a little misleading.

Never version is an improvement overall however I totally dislike and it's a bummer for me that it won't let you ( or at least I don't see that option) for allowing the FULL and NORMAL Windows 8 Start screen to show up when you click the icon, now I only see this ugly options for 'Small' 'Tall' 'Wide' and 'Large' , please bring back the option to open just the regular full screen Start Screen, I hate the current options! btw I just purchased it, but I didn't know of this change, should have tried it first

You can get the fullscreen metro start screen when you click the start button or press the windows key by changing settings on the control page.

Thanks, I noticed the option was actually available, that's why I edited my post, I see it's available if you select 'Windows 7 Style' option on the configuration screen which is a little misleading, thanks for the info though.

Whilst $5 isn't much Brad promised that it was going to be free for non-commercial use. So what happened with that?

Will anyone still be able to download and/or purchase the final version of Start8 when it is officially launched?

Oh yea. Start8 is going to be freeware still for non-commercial use.

To be fair, at the time, all Start8 did was bring up the Metro launcher in a window.

Since then, Microsoft completely removed the Start menu code from Windows 8 causing us to have to build it from scratch which was, as you can imagine, non-trivial.

So you're saying you don't stand by your statements by saying it'll be free for non-commercial use? Gotcha.

I would use it if the right side menu options were cascaded Control Panel > (menu)

This is something we are considering adding in future updates. For now the first step was allowing the user to have different options.

can someone download this for me. Idk whats up with there site its now submitting my email address. Or i can use the link

I like that you can hold down ctrl as a modifier key to switch between the behavior where clicking the Start button opens the Windows-7-style start menu or where it opens the Windows 8 start screen. That's a nice touch.

Oh nice, they've fixed search. $4.99 is not bad if you absolutely must have Win8 and a start menu alternative.
