Xbox 360 Metro Dashboard update landing December 6

According to the guys over at The Verge, who've got word straight from Microsoft, the new Fall 2011 Xbox 360 Dashboard will be landing on December 6th around the globe. While this is slightly later than the previously rumoured November 15th launch date, it’s still going to be a welcome refresh to the Xbox Dashboard.

For those that have been part of the Dashboard Preview program that’s been running for the past few weeks, you’ll already know what’s in store for Xbox 360 users. There is a whole new look to the Dashboard, following the Metro styling seen first in Windows Phone 7 and also on Xbox.com. You’ll also get Beacon support, a system where you can notify your friends as to when you’ll be available to play certain games.

Cloud storage for games saves will be available for Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers, and there will be integrated Facebook sharing plus a wider range of Kinect controls. The live TV streaming arrangements previously detailed by Microsoft will also be available to you depending on where you live.

This would have to be one of the bigger updates to hit the Xbox 360 console, the last time being the upgrade to NXE-style dashboard, which brought an enormous wealth of new features to the console. The Metro update we’re seeing here looks to be jam-packed, and I’ve got to admit, I’m excited for the December 6 release so I can get my hands on some cloud storage and Beacons.

Where is the web browser?

And the toaster, I want a god dam software toaster built in god dam it!!!!

seriously though, what made you think there would be a web browser, or that its be a good idea?

It's too soon! There are still many bugs that they need to fix, it's beeing rushed for christmas sales or what ?!

If your xbox is set to english and your Live ID is set to another language : enjoy a mixed up xbox and apparently it's "by design" and they will "take this feedback into consideration in future releases, but won't be able to include this in the current release."

The solution is "set your console and your Live ID to the same language.", only problem is english for Live ID is NOT an option for my country so now I'm stuck with a french xbox menu.

Why is it important that my xbox is set to english ? I want my games in english and not in a poor dubbed french ...

What makes you think they HAVEN'T fixed bugs (apart from your particular bug that they're unlikely to fix)? It's been a week or so since we got our build, which was obviously in testing for several weeks before that. The build coming out on the 6th December has obviously been in development for much longer and will incorporate many more fixes than the build we have, including fixes for issues reported during our "preview".

The xbox has two region settings, location and loale. Location simply says where it is in the world and locale sets the language. Unfortunately some idiot developers like ubisoft think that they should ignore the English locale setting and instead play all the games in the language of your location setting...

what are the new kinect features?

Which ones?

The ability to control the entire XBox Dashboard and Apps? This is what this update is all about.

The resoultion enhancements? They were technically turned on starting back in early 2011, but if the developers didn't use the 'trick' it didn't offer better resolution, as it required the developer to turn off other interfaces to enhance the others. (Give up 640x480 video for 640x480 infrared camera, etc.)

This update brings more resolution enhances without needing as much developer interaction, so even older titles will perform better, and i'm sure the Dashboard users can attest that it is far more accurate than it was before.

In addition to better resolution for kinect, Microsoft has been updating the software and processing for better accuracy all around, and better voice technologies.

They also reduced the CPU load the Kinect takes from the XBox, and for normal Kinect features, the load is less than 1% of one core now, where it was around 5-10% of a one core at launch.

(This is because of better software and Async technologies that handle the threading better, as the XBox 360 CPU can handle 6 threads at once even though it is only a tri-core CPU.)

Fall? More like Winter.

The northern hemisphere's winter solstice starts on the 21st December (so this year it'll be 21/12/2011), i also vaguely remember it starts at a stupid time like 19:00 or close.

Fall, or Autumn as it is know by many non-Americans, ends in December as the guys above have already mentioned.

Perhaps those that had a go at me in the forum thread saying it was definitely coming out in November would like to step forward and take a bow

Good to hear it works nicely. They did really drop the ball on the feature given anyone who ran under a US account had no problems with it and WP7 (mango) did not have the same block

Where the hell are the apps they promised: HBO Go, Comcast, etc...?

Waiting for the launch presumably. The preview program is just for the Dashboard, not the supporting content.

Oh, how I remember the days when consoles cost more and never were updated.

These Apps and services are not in everyone's access to the preview beta. Hold your horses, k...

Although I don't remember how much consoles used to cost, the days when they were never updated was only a couple of years ago. For instance, the GCN was still around in 2005...

They need to improve the cloud storage. Right now I can't backup any game saves that have limted transfer rules. As an example, Mass Effect 2 saves can't be simply copied to a USB, you would have to transfer the entire file off the harddrive to a new storage device for it to work. So basically the cloud storage is just a gloried 512MB usb stick.

I want to backup the game saves I usually can't, those are the ones I'm most afraid of losing, the others are already on usbs.

You should be moving them to the cloud. It's not meant as a "backup" it's meant to keep all your saves in one place and be able to use them anywhere. Ps it caches all the saves to your HD for offline access and then will re-sync updates to the cloud once you are online again.

i was wondering what they in sync meant, but that still doesn't help me right now for those game saves I can't normally copy or backup. It still won't put those on the cloud.

I dont see your problem here U want to backup ur saves but u dont want to put them on the cloud yet you want to keep them on a USB?

Cloud storage keeps it on your 360 and cloud so i don't see why you need to "copy" it anywhere... Unless u have 100's of rpg saves (FU OBLIVIAN AUTO SAVE!!! ) theres no problem?
