Earlier this year, Samsung launched the 9100 PRO SSD, its first PCIe Gen5 flagship solid-state drive that offers users high-end specs and blazing-fast speeds. Initially launched in three configurations (1TB, 2TB, and 4TB), the lineup is now expanding to include the whopping 8TB configuration with an eye-watering price tag.
The 8TB Samsung 9100 PRO SSD is available in two versions: one with a heatsink and one without it for systems that have built-in heatsinks. The drive uses a PCIe Gen5 connection and a custom 5nm controller to achieve sequential speeds of up to 14,800 MB/s and 13,400 MB/s read and write. Random speeds are rated at 2,200K and 2,600K IOPS for reads and writes respectively. The 9100 PRO SSD is backward compatible, but its maximum speeds are only possible on systems with processors and motherboards that support the PCIe Gen5 interface.
Besides cranking the drive"s speeds to 11, Samsung improved on the energy efficiency side. The manufacturer claims that the 9100 PRO SSD is 49% more energy efficient than its predecessor. Additionally, the heatsink variant provides additional cooling to keep temperatures lower and prolong the drive"s lifespan.
The 8TB Samsung 9100 PRO SSD comes with a limited 5-year warranty. It is also rated for 4,800 TBW. If you plan to purchase the drive, make sure to install the Samsung Magician app, which lets you monitor the drive"s health, update its firmware, and customize various features.
As for the price... High-capacity SSDs are not cheap, and if you combine 8TB with high-end speeds, you get an SSD that is worth like a decent gaming rig. The 8TB Samsung 9100 PRO SSD is now available for preorder, and it will set you back $999 for the heatsink-less and $1,019 for the variant with a heatsink. You can preorder the drive on Amazon or Samsung.com.
