Android usage: Oreo is now on 0.2% of devices

Google has published its latest monthly breakdown of platform usage, showing the proportion of active devices running each version of the Android OS. The data was collected during a seven-day period ending on October 2, and only represents devices that have visited the Google Play Store during that period, so it does not include AOSP devices.

Version Codename API Last month This month Change
2.3.3 - 2.3.7 Gingerbread 10 0.6% 0.6% -
4.0.3 - 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich 15 0.6% 0.6% -
4.1.x Jelly Bean 16 2.4% 2.3% -0.1
4.2.x 17 3.5% 3.3% -0.2
4.3 18 1.0% 1.0% -
4.4 KitKat 19 15.1% 14.5% -0.6
5.0 Lollipop 21 7.1% 6.7% -0.4
5.1 22 21.7% 21.0% -0.7
6.0 Marshmallow 23 32.2% 32.0% -0.2
7.0 Nougat 24 14.2% 15.8% 1.6
7.1 25 1.6% 2.0% 0.4
8.0 Oreo 26 - 0.2% 0.2

As has been the case lately, both Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich remain stagnant at 0.6% of all Google Play Android devices. Jelly Bean saw a combined loss of 0.3%, which is less than last month"s 0.7%.

For the first time in over a year and a half, Android 4.4 KitKat didn"t have the biggest loss on the list with 0.6%, and that"s likely due to the fact that its usage share has shrunken by so much. Instead, that honor falls to Lollipop with a combined loss of 1.1%, or even just 5.1 Lollipop, which shrunk by 0.7%.

Marshmallow continues to shrink by small amounts, as the version of the OS is beginning to age. The year-old Nougat is continuing to grow by the heaviest amounts with growth of 2.0%.

The biggest news though is that Android 8.0 Oreo has made its way to the list (the qualifier is that it has to be on over 0.1% of Google Play devices), with 0.2%. It"s interesting that it"s shown this early on, since the update has only been released for Nexus and Pixel devices, and is only shipping on a couple of Sony handsets.
