Last month, OpenAI announced that it plans to bring advertisements to ChatGPT Free and Go plan users in the coming months to make the technology accessible to a wider audience. OpenAI also emphasized its ad principles, saying it won’t sell users’ data to advertisers and that AI responses will remain independent of the ads shown.
Today, Anthropic, OpenAI’s primary competitor, announced that it has decided not to serve advertisements in Claude. Anthropic said users won’t see “sponsored” links next to their conversations, and responses won’t be influenced by advertisers or include third-party product placements.
With this decision, Anthropic is signaling that it will focus on businesses and developers, generating revenue primarily through enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions. To expand Claude’s reach as a free service for general users, Anthropic will instead focus on developing smaller models and may introduce lower-cost subscription tiers if there is demand.
Here"s what the Anthropic team wrote in the blog post announcing this decision:
Our experience of using the internet has made it easy to assume that advertising on the products we use is inevitable. But open a notebook, pick up a well-crafted tool, or stand in front of a clean chalkboard, and there are no ads in sight. We think Claude should work the same way.
There’s another way to look at this decision: Anthropic’s current position in the consumer AI market. Claude’s consumer reach is still relatively small compared to ChatGPT’s reported 800 million weekly active users, which likely makes it easier for Anthropic to take a firm “no ads” stance without giving up a meaningful ad opportunity.
Anthropic is also marketing this ad-free promise aggressively. The company has published a new set of Claude commercials built around the “ad-free” message, and one shortened version is slated to run during the Super Bowl, with another airing in pregame coverage.
You can argue that Anthropic made the right call. But frankly, this approach risks keeping frontier AI limited to people who can afford premium subscriptions every month. OpenAI’s ad-supported route, if implemented responsibly, looks like the more balanced path and one that could have a broader global impact. It is important to highlight that ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise will remain ad-free, similar to Anthropic.
