The Call of Duty franchise has a 22-year history of pushing out massively popular first-person shooter games filled with action-packed sequences, and now, the series is finally reaching the big screen. A new partnership has been announced between the Microsoft-owned Call of Duty publisher Activision and film production company Paramount for this purpose to deliver "an unforgettable cinematic event for fans worldwide."
The deal has Paramount producing, developing, and distributing a live-action Call of Duty feature film. A press release said that the movie will lean on what longtime fans expect to see and enjoy from the franchise while also expanding on it to appeal to newcomers.
"Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly," says David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Paramount. "We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve."
It"s unclear if this movie will be set in a specific timeline or Call of Duty universe or tell an original story separate from what has transpired in the Modern Warfare and Black Ops campaigns so far. Considering the origins of the series, the movie might even feature a World War II-set storyline, though that is pretty unlikely.
"Throughout its history, Call of Duty has captured our imagination with incredible action and intense stories that have brought millions of people together from around the world, and that focus on making incredible Call of Duty games remains unwavering," adds President of Activision, Rob Kostich. "With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment."
Considering the deal has just been announced, it may be quite a few years before we get to see a trailer or the movie itself. The director and cast are yet to be announced as well.
