Square Glade Games has stated that Outbound, its upcoming open‑world exploration title, will be coming to the PlayStation 5 soon. The game places players in control of an empty electric camper van, tasking them with scavenging resources, crafting upgrades, and building their ideal mobile home within a dynamically changing environment.
Outbound supports both solo and cooperative play for up to four participants. Solo players experience a relaxed, off‑grid adventure at their own pace; managing energy, gathering materials, and cultivating food to sustain their journey. In multiplayer mode, collaboration transforms the experience into a spirited road trip, as friends work together to explore new areas, share resources, and tackle environmental challenges side by side.
Sustainability is a central theme in Outbound’s design. Inspired by a prototype‑stage moment when co-founder, Tobi Schnackenberg, spotted a camper travelling past wind turbines and solar panels, the team incorporated renewable energy sources such as sun, wind, and rain into core gameplay mechanics. Players can recycle litter to unlock new van blueprints, while aesthetic details like sailboats on the horizon reinforce the game’s eco‑friendly ethos.
"Those are merely a couple of ways Outbound shines a light on sustainability through gameplay, and we inject that energy aesthetically, as well," Schnackenberg adds, "like how we show sailboats on the horizon as opposed to massive tankers and cargo ships.”
Throughout the journey, players are accompanied by a canine companion as well that can be adopted, named, and trained to fetch resources and deliver them back to the camper van. This functional pet adds both practical support and a warm, engaging presence to the "cozyvival" (cozy + survival) experience, which further underscores the game"s blend of survival mechanics and "low‑pressure vibe."
Finally, Outbound will also be fully compatible with the PlayStation Portal, leveraging its plug‑and‑play nature, so players can carry their adventure wherever they go.
