Epic is hiking Fortnite in-game currency prices to "help pay the bills"

We have seen prices of gaming hardware, consoles, and games themselves go up in price in recent times. However, it"s rare to see a broad microtransaction currency price hike happen, but that"s exactly what Epic Games just announced for its worldwide sensation Fortnite. Its in-game money system, dubbed V-Bucks, is going up in price later this month.

The changes are hitting every pack of V-Bucks players can buy, where they will receive lower amounts of the currency than before for the same price:

  • The $8.99 Pack will now give 800 V-Bucks (originally 1,000)
  • The $22.99 Pack will now give 2,400 V-Bucks (originally 2,800)
  • The $36.99 Pack will now give 4,500 V-Bucks (originally 5,000)
  • The $89.99 Pack will now give 12,500 V-Bucks (originally 13,500)

Purchasing exact amounts of the currency will also only give players 50 V-Bucks for $0.99, while previously it was 50 V-Bucks for $0.50. All these will change depending on the player"s region as well.

"The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we’re raising prices to help pay the bills," said Epic Games in a simple statement about the reason for this change.

Meanwhile, the Battle Pass will now cost 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000, but the amount of currency players can earn from it by playing the game has also been reduced to 800 V-Bucks to match. The OG, Music, and LEGO passes have also gone through similar changes:

  • The OG Pass will now cost 800 V-Bucks (originally 1,000)
  • The Music Pass will now cost 1,200 V-Bucks (originally 1,400)
  • The LEGO Pass will now cost 1,200 V-Bucks (originally 1,400)

There"s still some time for interested players to stock up on Fortnite"s V-Bucks for the original costs, as the price hike is slated to hit on March 19, 2026.
