Gemini in Chrome AI assistant arrives for Google Workspace users

Google announced that its AI-powered browser assistant, Gemini in Chrome, is now generally available for Workspace users. This comes a few weeks after the search giant pushed the biggest ever Google Chrome update, bringing its latest AI arsenal to the browser.

Just like the Gemini chatbot on the web and mobile apps, users can ask the browser assistant for answers and insights, and have in-depth two-way conversations through Gemini Live. They can also share their browser tab with Gemini to make it understand the context, which works up to 10 browser tabs.

Users can access Gemini in Chrome using the familiar "Ask Gemini" button present in the top-right corner of the browser window. The assistant will continue to reference the current tab in Chrome until sharing is turned off.

Gemini in Chrome supports Windows, Mac, and iOS for Workspace users who have access to the Gemini app as a core service. According to Google, a user living in the US aged 18 (and above) with their language set to English on a Mac, Windows, or iOS device will get access to Gemini in Chrome.

It has started rolling out to multiple Workspace tiers, including Business Starter/Standard/Plus, Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus, Frontline Starter/Standard/Plus, Education Fundamentals/Standard/Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, and Enterprise Essentials Plus.

Note that not all Workspace tiers have access to the Gemini app as a core service. Google said that "Gemini in Chrome will be blocked for customers who have signed the HIPAA Business Associate Amendment (BAA)."

While the assistant is enabled by default, Workspace admins can get rid of it by disabling the Gemini app service setting or the Chrome Gemini setting at the domain, organizational unit, or group level. The usage data for Gemini in Chrome will be clubbed with Gemini app usage visible in the Admin Console under Generative AI > Gemini Reports.

The announcement comes not long after Google launched its Gemini for Home AI assistant for smart home devices released in the last decade, alongside new Nest Cam and Doorbell, as well as an oval-shaped Google Home Speaker.

Gemini in Chrome is a part of Google"s massive power-up, which also brings AI Mode and agentic capabilities to the Chrome browser. The assistant is being gradually rolled out to general users in the US, including those who don"t have a paid Google AI subscription.
