Google has announced that it is investing an additional $9 billion in Oklahoma over the next two years, specifically aimed at cloud and AI infrastructure. The funds will be used to support a new data center campus in Stillwater and the expansion of the existing facility in Pryor. This announcement makes up part of a broader $1 billion commitment for American education and competitiveness.
With this money, Google wants to help prepare the state’s workforce and support the leadership of the US in artificial intelligence. The announcement was made alongside business and community leaders, as well as Governor Kevin Stitt and Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google.
The investment includes expanded education and workforce development programs with the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University being part of the Google AI for Education Accelerator. The program will provide students with no-cost access to Google Career Certificates and AI training courses with a goal to prepare students with critical AI and job-ready skills.
In addition, Google is providing funding for a program with the electrical training ALLIANCE with an aim to increase Oklahoma’s electrical workforce pipeline by a massive 135%. This is intended to help develop the labor force needed to build new energy infrastructure required to power AI applications of the future.
Google said that this represents an “extraordinary time for American innovation” and that the investments will not only help to power the state’s future, “but America’s AI leadership.” While Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and other American companies are competing with each other, they are also competing with companies from China, such as DeepSeek.
From a national security perspective, the US is looking to keep ahead in the AI race and having the necessary AI infrastructure and brains to develop AI is very important to staying ahead of the curve.
