Google is finally rolling out a dedicated bookmarks bar for Chrome on Android tablets and foldables. An integral part of every browsing experience, that’s been present in desktop browsers since day one, will now make searching the web on handhelds more practical.
The new bookmarks bar works, well, like bookmark bars we’re all familiar with. The interface element sits directly below the main address bar and spans the entire width of your display. It populates your saved sites using their recognizable favicons alongside the actual web page names. You can even interact with your saved folders directly within the bar itself. Also, if you long-press a specific bookmark, it will show the full URL.
If you have an excessive number of saved pages, a simple right-facing chevron will appear at the edge of the screen, which you can tap to reveal anything that cannot fit. Tapping the primary bookmarks button will still launch the traditional full-screen browsing menu, which allows for better management of bookmarks.
Google also specifically coded this update to remain hidden on standard smartphones so users do not lose any precious vertical viewing space. But for larger devices, which are naturally used in the horizontal orientation, a bookmarks bar makes much more sense.
The bookmarks bar for Chrome on Android is currently rolling out with version 146 of the browser. To enable the bookmarks bar, go to Settings > Appearance > Show bookmarks bar.
Apparently, there’s a trend with tech giants to bring the most basic features to their well-established product. For example, Microsoft is bringing the ability to pin Edge profiles as desktop shortcuts. All the recent technological breakthroughs, especially in the field of AI, are fine, but it’s the little things like this that keep the user base satisfied.
