Now there"s no need to add a third-party interpreter in your virtual meetings, while doing a meeting across the globe with your counterparts. As it expands its language capabilities, Google Meet has rolled out the real-time speech translation feature for its Meet Android and iOS Applications. Only a month before, the feature was made available for the Google Meet Web version.
Currently, Google Meet supports bidirectional translation between English and five languages: Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian. Following a Single language per Meeting rule, which means if English and Spanish are selected, only the two languages would be available for translation during the whole meeting.
Speech translation will be active by default and can be enabled or disabled through the Tools section in the Settings Menu. The Meet users accessing this feature can hear translations from their global counterparts, but are unable to translate their own speech. Google has specified that this is a developing feature, with ongoing improvements planned. Furthermore, in the upcoming updates, Google has said that users can expect a changed visual appearance of the User Interface while also being more accurate in translating the real-time speech.
Steps to turn Speech translation on or off:
- In the Google admin console, go to Menu, open Apps, and then Google Workspace settings, and then Google Meet.
- Click on Gemini Settings and then Speech translation.
- Here, you can enable or disable by checking the "Let people enable Speech translation for everyone" option in the meetings box.
- Click Save to Apply the changes.
Google says that this feature utilizes the real-time speech-to-speech translation to translate spoken language in near-real time, a technology that it has been researching. The goal is to reduce communication gaps and make global interactions more natural and inclusive.
For the Rapid release domains, the rollout began on April 8, 2026, and will hold out for the Schedule release domains starting April 23, 2026. There is a 15-day rollout period for both cases.
