Google postpones mobile phone launch in China

The Associated Press is reporting that Google has postponed a launch event where the company had planned to launch two new Android based phones.

Google was due to hold an event tomorrow to unveil two new Android devices from Samsung and Motorola. "It is postponed," Google spokeswoman Marsha Wang confirmed to AP. Google said last week that it had been the victim of sophisticated and targeted attacks originating in China. Due to this attack, and the background behind it, Google is now taking a second look at their operations in China, particularly Google.cn, where they currently offer censored search results as part of an agreement with China"s government. Google is now taking a big step by informing the government of China that it is no longer willing to provide censored results, and will be entering into discussions regarding how it can do this without breaking Chinese law. Should Google find themselves unable to reach an agreement, they may shut down Google.cn, and close their offices in China.

The Android devices were due to launch on China Unicom, a phone provider in China. Google representatives weren"t immediately available for comment.
