Around this time last year, Google introduced an "intelligent suggestion" feature in Sheets that automatically nudges you to convert data into a table. The way it worked was pretty simple: when you click on a meaningful range of data, a "Convert to table" suggestion will automatically appear. You could also do this manually by navigating through the menu to Format > Convert to table.
Now, Google says it"s building on that feature, bringing in Gemini to "make tables in Sheets even more useful". With Gemini now integrated, when you accept a "Convert to table" suggestion, Gemini will automatically format the data and create a sensible table name for you, like "Project_Status" or "Office_Expenses".
This makes referencing your data a lot easier. For instance, instead of a formula like "=SUM(E2:E15)", you can use a much more descriptive one like "=SUM(Office_Expenses[Amount])". The best part is that these references are dynamic; the formula"s range automatically expands or shrinks as you add or remove rows.
If, for any reason, you don"t like this feature, you can always disable it by heading to Tools > Suggestion controls and deselecting "Enable table suggestions".
The feature has started rolling out to Google Workspace customers on Business Standard/Plus and Enterprise Standard/Plus plans. It is also available to anyone with a Google AI Pro and Ultra plan or specific Gemini Education add-ons. People who previously bought the now-discontinued Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise add-ons get it as well.
Those on Rapid Release domains are getting it now through a gradual rollout. Other users on Scheduled Release domains will have to wait till September 12 for their rollout to begin. Since this capability falls under Gemini in Workspace features, your admin has to enable smart features and personalization settings in the Admin console for you to see it.
Speaking on Gemini in Google Workspace, Google recently brought a new Gemini-powered feature to Forms. This update suggests relevant questions to add to a form you are building. After you have put together at least two questions, a "Suggest questions" button will appear. Clicking it prompts Gemini to analyze your form"s content and generate up to four new questions that you can add with a single click.
