Grok chatbot blocked in Türkiye over insults to Erdogan, Ataturk

Türkiye (or Turkey) has become the first country in the world to ban an AI chatbot for insulting a person. According to Turkish media reports, the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor in Ankara has blocked access to the Grok AI chatbot due to its alleged insults to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founding father of the Republic of Türkiye.

The prosecutor"s office has noted that Grok AI has violated Türkiye"s laws by insulting the president and historical figures. The ban was enacted for "protecting public order," and the court has ordered Grok to remove at least 50 posts it made about Türkiye"s officials.

The controversy began after users on social media reported that the Grok chatbot was producing responses containing offensive language against Türkiye"s President Erdoğan and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Of course, Grok"s account on X reacted to the controversy, saying, "We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts. Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X."

Türkiye has a long history of blocking access to social media platforms. However, Grok is the first-ever AI chatbot to be blocked in Türkiye. This could signal that other AI chatbots, like ChatGPT and Gemini, should be cautious about producing responses about Türkiye"s president and the country"s founding father.

Elon Musk has recently said xAI has significantly improved. However, it didn"t take long for xAI to turn off Grok"s text generation capability over controversial comments, including praising Hitler, making offensive jokes about Jews, and other antisemitic statements.

Musk previously said his approach for training Grok would be to obtain "politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true" information from X users. As long as Grok is taught in this way, users should expect to see more controversial comments. Elon Musk also confirmed that the Grok 4 will be released on June 9 at 8:00 p.m. PT.
