Hands on with the Choetech USB-C Hub 8-in-1 Laptop Stand with 100W PD

Choetech reached out to me asking if I was willing to test its USB-C Hub 8-in-1 Laptop Stand that supports up to 100W Power Delivery. It has been out for around three months.

Introduction

Confusingly, this product has a slightly different description on the official website, as it is marketed slightly differently for use with MacBooks; it also has Apple-like pricing at a hefty $61.99. However, my contact provided an Amazon link in which the description clearly states it is for both Apple and Windows devices, and it also costs far less than on the official website, so do not fret, read on!

What"s in the box

  • USB-C Hub 8-in-1 Laptop Stand
  • USB-C to USB-C cable
  • Carry bag
  • User manual

The rather compact box has everything you need to get started. It also includes a short USB cable, which you can use to connect it to a laptop or wall charger (for Power Delivery purposes).

Design

Choetech does not state anywhere on the product page or specifications what materials were used to make it, but at 412 grams, it becomes obvious that it"s mostly made up of aluminum/metal. On folding and unfolding, there is no noise, except for the sound of the plastic sliders sliding inside the cross-section of the Stand.

It"s a sort of silver-gray metallic and looks quite premium to me.

On top, there are four rubber stand-offs to protect devices that are used on it; the bottom has four rubber feet with a good stand-off clearance. On the front and rear there are plastic coverings for what would otherwise be hollow metal.

Once unfolded, it offers a device height between 16° and 57 degree angles in nine different stages. For extra sturdiness, the height is secured with metal stand-offs.

On the left side of the Stand, and from left to right you have a HDMI 2.0b port, two USB 3.0 Gen 1 (5Gbps) ports, a TF, and SD Card slot, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) data port, a Type C PD port, and the Type-C input port which can be connected directly to the laptop or a wall charger.

Usage

It is pretty straightforward: unfold, set the height and plop your laptop on it. At maximum width, it is not as wide as my 14-inch GEEKOM X14 Pro laptop that I reviewed earlier this week, but all the same, it felt secure on the Stand.

I kind of wish the ports were on the right, though. In a normal PC setup, most people will have cable managed everything to the right, as that is normally where the PC lives, on the right, so if you are connecting a display on the Stand, all of a sudden you have to thread it through to the left. This also goes for a keyboard and a mouse.

As you can see above, the Stand also supports different width sizes, so you can also plop a 7-inch tablet on it, and secure it properly from the back at an angle of your choosing. You could even use it as a (temporary?) Phone stand, since the shortest possible width is roughly that of a modern smartphone.

Conclusion

What I liked:

  • Lightweight and compact.
  • Includes carry bag.
  • Adds TF- and SD card option to any device.
  • Premium build.

What I didn"t like:

  • Would have preferred ports on the right.

Would I recommend?

There"s not much to dislike at all with this 8-in-1 Stand; it can expand options for laptops that have minimal ports, and I do like the TF and SD card option, so this makes it also possible to hook up to a PC if you need to pull data from a camera or dashcam.

Where to buy

My contact did originally give me a unique discount code, but that is no longer working on Amazon. Happily, though, the 30% off code I was given is a bit less than the current, as-of-writing 33% off price listed on Amazon. In addition, although Choetech lists it at $61.99 MSRP, on Amazon it is listed as $59.99 along with the 33% discount, happy days!
