Six years after announcing it, Team Cherry finally released Hollow Knight: Silksong to its huge fanbase earlier this year. As expected, the Metroidvania experience has gone on to sell millions of copies. It seems the studio has many more things planned for it though, as the game"s "first big expansion" has been announced, which will continue Hornet"s adventures. There is good news for owners of the base game too.
The Sea of Sorrow expansion does not have a release date yet, with it slated to land for the base game sometime in 2026. As another surprise, Team Cherry revealed that it will be releasing the expansion for free to all players.
According to the developer, Hollow Knight: Silksong - Sea of Sorrow will carry new areas to explore, fresh bosses to beat, and more content. It will be a nautically themed expansion, though not much more information about it was revealed today. Catch its new teaser trailer below.
Considering that Silksong was originally supposed to be an expansion for Hollow Knight before it became a full-fledged sequel, there"s always a chance of this free addition taking a bit longer to develop than announced. The studio said that more details will be announced right before Sea of Sorrow"s launch, much like how it did with the Silksong launch.
At the same time, Team Cherry revealed that seven million copies of Hollow Knight: Silksong have been sold since its launch in September. This is in addition to the "millions more" that joined via Game Pass across PC and Xbox consoles.
"It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!)," said the developer. "Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further."
The original Hollow Knight isn"t being left behind by the studio either. It today announced a Switch 2 port for it is under development. Moreover, improvements are coming to other platforms too, including ultra-wide display support on PC, bug fixes, and more.
