Images of Instagram in the Windows Phone store promising, but raise doubt

There have been tons of rumors that the popular Instagram app may finally be coming to Windows Phone devices, or at least the ones that Nokia makes. Now, a Twitter user has posted up an image that seems to show that an Instagram Windows Phone app is indeed in the works ... or it could be a very well done hoax.

The image comes from a newly launched Twitter account called AnonTechleaks. The actual photo seems to show an entry on the Windows Phone Store that has the Instagram app listed as coming to Windows Phone 7 and 8 smartphones. The image also indicates that the app is not available for download, which could mean this photo comes from an internal developer page.

The photo certainly looks like it could have been taken from the real Windows Phone Store site, but the first sentence in the listing also says, "It’s a free, fun, and simple way to make and share gorgeous photos on your Android.". That makes us think this could be a fake screenshot, or it could simply be a placeholder for the page until the final Instagram Windows Phone app is released.

To add further suspicion to the credibility of the post, the leaker tweeted a new image with the corrected text to say Windows Phone, instead of Android. Stating that the other image was a bit old and has since been updated; this new image is supposedly the go-live information.

In any case, there"s certainly going to be a huge demand for an official Instagram app for Windows Phone and we hope its just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.

Neowin has contacted Instagram regarding the validity of the image. This article will be updated if and when a response is received.
