Intel, AMD, Apple, HP, Sony fight against Canadian CD levy

An unlikely coalition of the Canadian branches of Intel and AMD, as well as HP, Sony, Motorola, Apple, Costco and Staples is attempting to prevent a proposal that would hike the price of 100 blank CDs and make them soar by a not insignificant 181%, IT Business Canada reports today.

And the coalition – dubbed the Canadian Coalition for Fair Digital Access (CCFDA) -- has teamed up with Industry and Heritage Canada against the Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) proposal.

MP3 players could be withdrawn from the market if the proposal goes ahead, the report said.

Canada appears to be the only country with such an additional tax, causing people to cross the border, south, or to buy from the grey market or the Internet.
