Marvel Tōkon gets an August release date just as X-Men fighters get revealed

Fighting game fans may remember that Sony threw its hat into the ring last year with the Marvel universe-set entry Tōkon: Fighting Souls for PC and PlayStation 5. Today, during the State of Play presentation, the publisher finally gave it a release date while also revealing that the X-Men will be a part of the starting lineup.

The Unbreakable X-Men will be a team of characters players can pick as their fighter, with the popular comic-book heroes appearing in both the episodic campaign and multiplayer battles.

Here are the four fighters announced today by developer Arc System Works:

  • Storm – The team leader. A mutant who can freely command the forces of nature, such as wind and lightning.
  • Magik – A young mutant highly skilled in both magic and the sword she creates herself known as the Soulsword.
  • Wolverine – Battle-scarred but unbroken, he fights alongside the young X-Men with Adamantium claws.
  • Danger – The AI of the Danger Room, once used by the X-Men for training, which has gained autonomy and taken physical form.

The studio has also joined forces with Marvel for writing the episodic storyline and building out the game"s own universe, which has Marvel heroes and villains facing a fresh, yet-to-be-announced threat.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is releasing on August 6 across PlayStation 5 and PC. The title will have a $59.99 price tag for the standard edition, with $84.99 (Deluxe) and $99.99 (Ultimate) editions also available with additional goodies like the Year 1 character pass and cosmetic add-ons. Pre-orders will be opening on February 19.

Sony is offering players three lobby cosmetics for anyone who pre-orders the fighting game. These are the Infinity Gauntlet, Baby Groot, and Cosmic Surfboard.

We will have to wait and see how Tōkon will fare in the fighting game space as a full-priced title with paid characters and arenas. Riot Games attempted to jump into the space earlier this year with 2XKO, and its launch has not gone so well, despite being a free-to-play experience.
