Microsoft gives more time to Sentinel customers for portal migration

Microsoft Sentinel is a cloud-native Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution that organizations can leverage for intelligent security analytics, powered by AI. Last year, Microsoft announced that Sentinel customers had until July of this year to migrate from the Azure portal to the Defender portal, but now it has decided to give them more time.

Microsoft says that while many of its customers have adopted the Defender portal experience already, others have requested more time to fully migrate away from the Azure portal. This feedback primarily comes from those managing Sentinel in large and complex environments. In July 2025, Microsoft had given customers until July 1, 2026, to complete their portal migration, but now, it has pushed this deadline out to March 31, 2027.

Redmond believes that this will give organizations ample time to plan their move, while also testing the new capabilities being offered through the Defender portal. In order to further encourage customers to migrate to the Defender portal, Microsoft has also highlighted several capabilities that are only available on this platform.

These include Security Copilot with agentic workflows, Sentinel datalake, Sentinel graph, automatic attack disruption over sources like AWS and Proofpoint, enhanced SOC optimization recommendations, and modern data management solutions. Other recent capabilities and those coming soon include enhancements to SOAR and case management, multi-tenancy management, improvements to incident creation, better latency and reliability, and incident descriptions that can be queried through the API.

If you"re an IT admin managing Sentinel across your organization and have not transitioned to the Defender portal yet, Microsoft has encouraged you to plan your migration as soon as possible by following the instructions detailed here. The Redmond tech giant has emphasized that the Defender portal is where the most updates will be made, so there"s no point in being an Azure portal holdout, unless there are compatibility reasons.
