Microsoft is now offering Xbox Live Gold 12-month membership for just $39.99

An Xbox Live Gold membership isn"t quite the must-have that it once was, since Microsoft changed its policies last June to allow console owners to run third-party apps - such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer or YouTube - without being a Gold member.

But if you enjoy online multiplayer gaming, Xbox Live Gold is essential - and given that membership now includes free and discounted games every month, for both the Xbox One and Xbox 360, there"s plenty to like about it.

And as Major Nelson (aka Microsoft"s Larry Hryb) points out, you can now grab Gold with one-third off the normal price.

The Microsoft Store is currently selling 12-month Xbox Live Gold membership for just $39.99, saving you $20 on the regular amount. You can get the membership as a digital download, or if you prefer to buy a physical copy - perhaps as a gift - you can also order it in card form.

As we reported earlier today, Gold members with an Xbox One will be able to grab Rayman Legends free next month under the latest Games with Gold promotion, while Xbox 360 owners will get Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite.
