Microsoft partners with Epic to get Fortnite on Xbox Cloud Gaming for free

Xbox Cloud Gaming has been a part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate since 2020, offering subscribers access to a suite of games included in the service as long as the membership is intact. However, that changed today, with Fortnite joining the fray as a completely free experience available to everyone.

As long as they have an internet connection, any user with a PC or mobile device running Android, iOS, or iPadOS can now use Xbox Cloud Gaming to play Fortnite without signing up to a Game Pass subscription. A Microsoft account is a requirement though.

"With no installation or memberships required, all you need to do is go to Xbox.com/play on your web browser and sign-in with your Microsoft Account to party-up with friends or earn your next Victory Royale in Fortnite," explained Microsoft in an Xbox Wire post today.

Fortnite on Xbox Cloud Gaming can be played using a compatible controller or native touch controls when using mobile devices.

"At Xbox we want to make gaming accessible to the 3 billion players around the world, and cloud has an important role in that mission," said Xbox Cloud Gaming VP and head of product Catherine Gluckstein. "Quite simply we want you to have more choice in both the games you play and the way you choose to play them."

This is only the start of free additions to Xbox Cloud Gaming too. Microsoft added it is forming a free-to-play catalog just for the service going forward, all playable without the need of the $14.99 a month costing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
