Microsoft releases 19H1 build 18362.113 to Insiders in Slow and Release Preview rings

Today is patch Tuesday, meaning that all supported versions of Windows receive cumulative updates, from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Along with the public releases of Windows 10, the Slow and Release Preview rings, which are currently testing the upcoming May 2019 Update, are also getting cumulative updates. Windows 10 build 18362.113 is now rolling out to users in those rings with a few fixes leading up to the public release of the May 2019 Update, also known as version 1903.

The update is a minor build that brings with it a few fixes. Here is what’s fixed in today’s build:

  • Provides protections against a new subclass of speculative execution side-channel vulnerabilities, known as Microarchitectural Data Sampling, for 64-Bit (x64) versions of Windows (CVE-2018-11091, CVE-2018-12126, CVE-2018-12127, CVE-2018-12130). Use the registry settings as described in the Windows Client and Windows Server articles. (These registry settings are enabled by default for Windows Client OS editions and Windows Server OS editions).
  • Addresses an issue that decreases Internet Explorer’s performance when you use roaming profiles or you don"t use the Microsoft Compatibility List.
  • Addresses an issue that may cause the text, layout, or cell size to become narrower or wider than expected in Microsoft Excel when using the MS UI Gothic or MS PGothic fonts.

There is, however, a known issue that affects Windows Defender Application Guard and Windows Sandbox:

Symptom Workaround
After installing this update, users may experience error “0x800705b4” when launching Windows Defender Application Guard or Windows Sandbox.

Use the credentials of a local admin to create and set the following registry keys on the Host OS then restart the Host:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Containers\CmService\Policy]

"DisableClone"=dword:00000001

"DisableSnapshot"=dword:00000001

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

The build is being offered to systems that are on build 18356.30 or higher. If you are enrolled in the Release Preview or Slow rings, this update should be automatically downloaded and installed through Windows Update. As with previous month’s update for the OS, there also is a KB article for the update (KB4500109), which is a new trend for releases in the Insider Preview. The update can also be downloaded manually from the Update Catalogue here.

While there is no official date for when the May 2019 Update will be released for the general public, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the update be pushed soon, since the OS has been in testing for little more than a month in the Release Preview ring.
