Microsoft releases first Redstone 2 build to the Fast ring: 14901 for PCs

Microsoft today released the first Insider Preview build since the Anniversary Update launched last week: Windows 10 for PCs build 14901. There aren"t any release notes just yet, but Microsoft promised that this build wouldn"t have much that"s new in terms of features; instead, it should focus on improvements to OneCore, like early Redstone 1 (Rs1) builds did.

Today"s release is also in line with the company"s other promise, which is that PC builds will come first and Mobile won"t be for a few weeks. Indeed, this is not the first time that Microsoft began rolling out builds for a new PC update before phones even got the old update.

If you can"t tell from the giant image above, today"s build is codenamed Redstone 2 (Rs2), which is slated to be the next major update to Windows 10. Non-Insiders won"t see it until 2017 (likely April), as Microsoft has stated that there are to be no more major updates to the OS this year.

If the company follows the same pattern as it did with Rs1, we"ll likely see a number of builds with under-the-hood improvements, along with some minor new features, until it can hold an event to show off what"s coming in the currently-unnamed next Windows 10 update, codenamed Redstone 2.
