Microsoft releases new firmware for the Surface Pro and Surface Book

Microsoft is releasing firmware updates for a few Surface devices today, including the Surface Book, Pro, and Pro with Advanced LTE. They"re the first updates that any Surfaces have received since January 10, when the company started pushing out mitigations for the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.

Here"s what"s new for the Surface Book today:

Surface – Firmware – 90.2098.256.0

Surface Embedded Controller Firmware - Firmware

  • 90.2098.256.0 improves system stability.
Surface – System – 1.1.339.1

Surface Integration – System device

  • 1.1.339.1 improves battery stability.


According to the value indicator chart that Microsoft provides, these updates provide improvements for reliability, performance, and battery life. There is no effect on security, connectivity, or compatibility.

As for the Surface Pro, the model with Advanced LTE gets the following update:

Surface – Firmware – 233.2102.1.0

Surface System Aggregator Firmware – Firmware

  • 233.2102.1.0 improves system stability.


And the standard Surface Pro gets the following:

Windows Update History Name Device Manager Name
Surface – Firmware – 233.2099.256.0

Surface System Aggregator Firmware – Firmware

  • 233.2099.256.0 improves system stability.


The Surface Pro update should only improve reliability, and leaves everything else unaffected.
